I'd like to add, how about the 37 page report on Salisbury Middle School being investigated by the Department of Justice. It seems that there's been major complaints about black students being disciplined more then white students. Funny, Salisbury Middle School is 80% black. Some teachers have 100% black students in their class.
The report is not just about SMS, it is about the whole county system. Margo Handy made it her mission to beat down the administrators at their opening meeting about it.
Administrators hands are tied. Gone are the days when the punishment fits the crime. First they need to get permission to suspend a special ed kid. What's next, have to call Margo Handy to suspend a black or Hispanic kid?
One would hope that discipline takes place where discipline is due, not avoiding it because of a quota number reached. Self-discipline is the message, not punishment -- if you can't behave in a civilized way, we'll shoe you how.... again.
One can hope... but reality is different. Misbehaving kids run many public school classrooms. And young teachers are many times intimidated and powerless to do any teaching because of the constant behavior problems.
So sad. This world of ours keeps getting worse yet we keep blaming everything else but ourselves. If each person would take care of their own life and families lives then we wouldn't have to worry about it. But we will just keep blaming each other until the end of times it seems.
I would challenge anyone doubting sms teachers and admins to go spend one day in their role. And then take look at how many repeat offenders are getting massive # of referrals, which isn't considered when just looking at race categories. No one would want their job, guaranteed.
Thank god for social media, lol.
