COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WJZ) – The University of Maryland’s Byrd Stadium could soon have a different name.
Tracey Leong reports for WJZ.
Some have argued the football stadium is named after a man with racist beliefs, and this prompted the university president to form a group to evaluate their options.
“President Loh feels it’s really important to get as much campus input as possible, which is why he formed this committee, faculty, staff, students, this is their university, too,” said assistant vice president of marketing, Brian Ullmann.
According to one University of Maryland student, “The university should definitely take it into consideration,” said Frederique Thompson. “It will be like a domino effect where people are going to look for names to change.”

ReplyDeleteWe should rename the White House also
What a bunch of P C idiots.
Go ahead I know your thinking it name it BLM (black lives matter) it will be racist just watch and see. But if they are going to change the name wouldn't it be better to make it something for everyone like Hope, Peace, Love ,Infinity.
ReplyDeleteA winning season would be really nice, but if they wait for that it might take a while.
ReplyDeleteJust change everything to "no name"...
ReplyDeleteThe PC morons are at best short sighted. "Curley" Byrd left the University in 1954, after a National Championship in 1953, to run for governor. That's 61 years ago. Give me definitive proof he was a racist. In 1954 there still was segregation in the United States. The bottom line is there are many supporters, financially, of the athletic programs and this just may disturb enough that they forego any charitable contributions. That's right, its about the money. Most don't realize that the athletic scholarships are provided by the Terrapin Club not the State or the School. Just recently the University had decided they were not going to show the movie American Sniper because it might offend some of the "new Americans". A good friend and long time contributor pulled his annual contribution and did not renew his season tickets. That's only one I know of. But how many more are out there making the same decision? Just my opinion. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.
ReplyDelete1014-Byrd was a proponent of "Separate but equal" as both a university administrator and as a political candidate. Ipso facto, he was a racist. Not hard to see.
ReplyDelete10:45 you don't get it. In 1945 everybody was a proponent of "Separate but equal". Ipso facto back at you. Accept the fact that you can't change history.
ReplyDeleteMaryland became obsolete around here when it joined the big ten. Could not care less if the place burned to the ground. except we'd have to pay to rebuild it with tax money.
ReplyDeleteI am shocked that more Crisfielders have not protested this, considering he is a local legend.
