AS BEACH SEASON WINDS DOWN, MD 404 HEATS UP WITH RESURFACING PROJECT IN CAROLINE COUNTY

Motorists Should Expect Nighttime Single Lane Closures
until mid-November
Now that schools are back in session and the vacation season is nearing the end for many people, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) has started a more than two mile resurfacing project on MD 404 (Shore Highway) between the Choptank River Bridge and Legion Road in Denton. Weather permitting; the project should be completed by late fall.

“The pavement on MD 404 along the eastern edge of Denton has outlived its life and needs to be resurfaced to provide a smoother ride for the thousands of motorists who use MD 404 each day,” said SHA District Engineer Greg Holsey. “We ask that motorists slow down in the work zone for their protection, as well as our crew’s safety.”

SHA will grind (remove the top layer of asphalt), resurface and restripe the two mile section of MD 404. The work will take place at night between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Motorists can expect single lane closures during the project. Crews will use cones, barrels and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.

This section of MD 404 in Denton has an average daily traffic volume of 25,000 vehicles daily, but traffic is significantly lighter at night. This particular section of MD 404 was last resurfaced completely in 1998.

SHA’s contractor for the $2.6 million project is Allen Meyers, Inc. of Dover, DE.

In addition to this project, drivers may also encounter mobile or short-term work zones. Always expect the unexpected, pay extra close attention and drive slowly through any work zone. Whether it’s a tree trimming operation or a bridge project, be aware when orange is there: Think Orange (the color of construction equipment and signs), stay alert and slow down. Everyone is at risk.

  1. They really need an overpass intersection where it joins 50!
That stoplight causes backups all the way to the bridge and 213 at the same time!
How about fixing the real problem boneheads! Another layer of asphalt or another lane on 404 isn't going to help...fix it where it slows down - not where it speeds back up after!

  2. They were milling the left lane of eastbound 404 between the Choptank River and Hobbs Road when I went through this evening.

This section of the Denton Bypass should have been resurfaced 2 years ago.
