BOYDS, Md. (WJLA) — A 16-year-old was fatally struck by an Amtrak train around 4:46 p.m. Monday, according to police.

The young man, who has been identified as John Martin DeReggi Jr. of Boyds, Md., was walking along the tracks with two other teenagers when, for reasons unknown, walked into the path of an oncoming northbound Amtrak train. DeReggi died on the scene. The two teens, one male and one female, were taken to the hospital without injuries.

DeReggi was a sophomore at Clarksburg High School in Maryland and also a member of the track team, according to multiple websites.
