Minnesota dentist 'deeply' regrets 'taking' Cecil the lion

Zimbabwean authorities say that a Minnesota dentist is responsible for slaying one of the country's most beloved lions.

On Tuesday, The Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force said in a statement that Walter James Palmer of Eden Prairie, Minn., paid at least $50,000 to track and kill the animal.

The conservation group and Zimbabwean authorities said that Palmer ultimately killed, Cecil, a protected lion and one of the most famous animals at the Hwange National Park. Cecil was fitted with a GPS collar and tracked by the Oxford Universityresearch program, according to a statement from Johnny Rodrigues, the chairman for Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force.

On Tuesday, Palmer said in a statement, "I relied on the expertise of my local professional guides to ensure a legal hunt," CBS reported.

"I had no idea that the lion I took was a known, local favorite, was collared and part of a study until the end of the hunt," Palmer said, according to CBS. "I deeply regret that my pursuit of an activity I love and practice responsibly and legally resulted in the taking of this lion."

He added, according to the statement, that he had not been contacted by authorities but would work with them.

  1. This despicable piece of rubbish should more than deeply regret his actions. He is now the hunted. Hopefully, he will suffer a long and extremely painful torture prior to his beheading, skinning an placement in a trophy case.

  2. This is one dentist that I would never visit again.

  3. I don't blame the dentist. Blame the tour guides who worked to find this Lion for him to hunt. If the dentist wasn't white, this wouldn't be news. They will use this as an example of the new politically correct term: White Privilege
Or bashing white males in general!

  4. I don't think people should be so hard on Palmer after all he paid $50,000.00 to hunt a trophy animal and relied on his guides to make sure everything was legal. It was his guides that were crooks just out to get his money.

  5. Yeh scumbag that's classy hunting.....tie dead animals to the front of a vehicle to trick your prey........he's a classless pos!!!!

  6. His only "deep regret"is that he got caught. His "regret" didn't stop him fron taking the head and skin for a trophy.

  7. Even a legit Safari type hunt results in endangered species being killed.I never understood the challenge of an elephant hunt.

  8. 7:43 Why, what he did was perfectly legal. the guides he hired were the ones in the wrong and they are being punished. get off the PC Bandwagon

  9. This is a disgusting practice and should not be allowed at all. Leave the big game alone.

  11. 7:54. This has NOTHING to do with whether he was white or black. Would make no difference. In a very sad way, I'm glad this happened so maybe this senseless "hunting" can be eliminated.

  12. Whether you agree with his actions or not, there's one thing for sure: His dental practice is all but over and done with, and he'll probably never again be able to afford big game hunting again.
He'll be lucky to get a job yanking out teeth at the Free Clinic after all this.

  13. I don't agree with hunting just for the sport of killing something, however I have no problem with it, if it is for putting food on the table if you are starving. In this case it was a senseless killing for sport. This dentist will be lucky if he will be able to keep his practice. He will have to change his name after this!

  14. This story is blowing the tree hugger crowds minds. Planned Parenthood selling dissected baby parts doesn't bother them. Humans are top of the food chain baby, deal with it.

  15. I have no problem with this. Africa offers the hunting, he could afford it, and he got his prize. Not his fault the guides didn't identify the animal.

  16. This is no worse than rich guys paying to hunt on a Texas ranch for Buffalo, Elk, Deer, Boars, it is the same thing, shooting pets!

  17. If he's truly regretful then he should personally fund and support the pride.
To force someone like this to financially support[fully taxed] the protection of Cecil's pride is the only thing[money] they will understand. I feel the U.S. should charge him[there's enough GD laws around that one could be found] and plea bargain to those ends.

  18. 12:15 The US shouldn't have anything to do with this. Legal hunt in Africa. He had all of the proper licenses and tags. It was a legit hunt. GTFOH with all of this government intrusion crap. This guy should tell everyone harassing him to **** off.

  19. This type hunting is like shooting fish in a barrel.
I detest people who participate in this type thing
    & brag about it.

    Don't think he didn't know better----he did----He
has to be an egotistical maniac!!

His "head" should be put out for trophy & mounted!!

  20. Pay to go hunt a Buffalo, or a Tenn. wild Boar hunt, the animals are in fenced in compounds, your killing penned animals, like shooting at dogs in an ally. Not a real hunt, it is for lazy idiots!

  21. Even deer hunting. Throw some corn out and a block of salt. Put up a camera that tells you exactly what time the deer will appear then shoot it. WOW!! THE GREAT WHITE HUNTER! !! Freaking joke. What's worse is when someone sends a pic of a 7 year old getting a 12 pt. Buck. Give me a break.

  22. 4:36 If someone takes their child to hunter safety class, teaches them to handle a firearm, and takes them legally hunting, they are teaching them responsibly and respect. If the makes lucky shot and takes down a 12 point buck, that's awesome. My 10 year old niece made a lucky shot a couple years ago, first shot she ever fired, dropped a little spike buck right there.

  23. All people who hunt are lowlifes because they are mentally challenged. They feel that killing things will make them feel better. I feel bad for the lion. Hunters are whimps hiding to shoot somthing wow what fun is that I guess they aren't real men. Lol why don't you fight the animals like real men.

  24. This endangered black maned lion was lured out of protected ground. Walter Palmer and his guide dragged an animal carcass up and down the boundary lines with a vehicle. Until they enticed him and some females out to it. Palmer wanted 'this' lion, not just a lion trophy.
Then this POS, who's already been convicted of killing a black bear out of bounds and dragging it 40 miles back to where he said he shot it, shoots Cecil then ends up having to track him for 40 GD hours and the cat still isn't dead! Now, if that's a hunter, then I'm sorry to call myself one and any of you 'b-wana great white hunter' types who think that's hunting belong in hiding right along side of this puke.
