'Beyond Unacceptable': Judge OKs Uranium Mine at Grand Canyon

Slamming ruling, conservationists warn of irreversible contamination of the canyon's underground aquifers.

In June, the Grand Canyon was named one of the "Most Endangered Places" in America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. But the designation came just two months too late to possibly influence U.S. District Court Judge David Campbell. In April, he denied a request by the Havasupai tribe and a coalition of conservation groups to halt new uranium mining next to Grand Canyon National Park, just six miles from the Grand Canyon's South Rim.

  2. Incredible that the water level was that high,but the horizontal lines say it all.At some point in history the water almost covered those mountains.

  4. Um, 316, you do know the rocky mountains were formed by tectonic plates pushing together and the ground rose up, right? Those erosion marks were commonly from "before that".
