COLUMBIA, Md. (WJZ) — A major drug bust at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia. Police seize cash and tanks of laughing gas at a concert, arresting 12 people accused of selling the chemical.

Christie Ileto with details.

One concertgoer says distributors were filling balloons with the chemical and selling them to people leaving. Police say the suspects routinely target large concerts.

What started as a night of chords and high notes at a Phish concert ended with police busting 12 people outside Merriweather Post Pavilion for possession and distribution of nitrous oxide — also known as laughing gas — a chemical that can be mind altering when inhaled.

“These suspects are part of an organized group that travels the East Coast distributing this drug at different concerts,” said Lori Boone, Howard County Police Department.

Cash, 32 tanks and cars are seized.

  2. The problem is they are stealing the undiluted tanks of nitrous from hospitals. This has caused the FDA to get involved and are calling this nationwide crackdown "No Laughing Matter." People are dying. It's not your N2O used as the food additive in whipped cream. It's medical grade that when used in a medical setting is diluted with oxygen before use.

  3. Its diluted with O2 so you can keep it on as a mask and not die from no O2.

  4. 2:26 it's not diluted w/oxygen until it's being used. What they are stealing and selling is undiluted and it's very dangerous.

  5. They are holding up the drivers who are delivering the tanks to hospitals too. I read about this happening a few times in the past year in one of the many papers I read online.

  8. It goes from your lungs into the bloodstream and immediately replaces the oxygen in your bloodstream. This can and has caused death and also many times irreversible brain damage resulting in permanent disorders of consciousness i.e. persistent vegetative state, coma, minimally conscious.

  9. Not huffing a few hits from a balloon, which doesn't restrict access to the air.

  10. Had a buddy worked at a welding supply. He swapped the tanks at the dental offices on Fridays... we had the "MT" tanks for the weekend! Lots of laughs until Monday! 1974-ish?
