Georgetown, DE - The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred early this morning.
Preliminary investigation has determined that the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. this morning, Monday July 6, 2015, as Trevor W. West, 32 of Georgetown, was operating a 2007 GMC Sierra northbound on DuPont Boulevard (US113) in the left lane just north of Bramhall Street. Jennifer L. Hughes, 44 of Dover, was walking eastbound across the highway from the center median when she walked into the path of the pickup truck. The GMC struck Hughes in the left lane causing her to land in the right northbound lane while the truck was able to come to a controlled stop just north of the impact in the center median.
Jennifer Hughes, who was not crossing in a designated crosswalk and not carrying a flashlight, was transported by EMS to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Trevor West, who was properly restrained, was uninjured in the crash.
At the request of Georgetown Police Department, the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit was contacted to conduct the investigation into this incident. Alcohol and speed do not appear to be a factor and no charges are expected to be filed.
US113 northbound between Bramhall Street and Bridgeville Road (SR18/404) was closed for approximately two and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
“Troopers remind pedestrians to use caution and safety when walking on or near roadways. If you must cross a roadway utilize appropriate cross walks and make sure to look left, then right, then left again before proceeding. When walking near a roadway always make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials. Pedestrians that are walking at night must carry a flashlight for added safety.”
