Billions in Unfinished Business as Congress Heads Out for Vacation

Although the new Republican-dominated Congress can point to a number of bipartisan successes – including new fast-track Pacific Rim trade legislation and a long-overdue revision to Medicare’s reimbursement policies for doctors – a shocking array of must-pass fiscal and budget legislation will remain while lawmakers celebrate the month-long August holiday.

“Congress is not getting its job done because it’s too polarized and its ordinary processes have broken down,” said Alice Rivlin, a former director of the Congressional Budget Office and a senior economist at the Brookings Institution. “There have been lots of promises [of an improved legislative system] but it’s not happening. 1. Amazing how they can put the country on hold so often to golf. We need leaders who will stay the course.

  5. You all are looking at this incorrectly. This country makes out best when Congress is gone/does nothing. If the US Congress were to recess for 5 years or more we would have the best economic recovery in history.

  6. Does this surprise anyone? They get $170,000 minimum salary, plus an outlandish benefit package, plus other perks and kickbacks for approximately 6 months work. That six months includes their committees etc. They travel on the Tax Payer for pleasure around the world like Obama and Michelle. They wonder why the Tax Payer is pi$$ed off. Maryland is just as bad in Annapolis. They make around $50,000 for doing nothing for 3 months work.
