New Maryland law taking effect on free school meals

BALTIMORE (AP) — A new Maryland law will enable an entire school to qualify for free breakfast and lunch, instead of only individual students.

Del. Keith Haynes, a Baltimore Democrat who sponsored a bill this year, is scheduled to announce the enactment of The Hunger Free Schools Act of 2015 on Tuesday in Baltimore.

The new law allows schools to participate in the Community Eligibility Program, which provides for a school-based qualification, instead of an individual-based qualification for free meals.

  1. FREE breakfast and lunch? This is nothing more than redistribution of wealth from those that pay taxes to those that don't.

  2. More give-aways!

  3. If children receive free lunch and free breakfast at school, their parents should not receive food stamps to cover those same meals. Three school age children equals 15 lunches and 15 breakfasts paid for twice every week by hard working taxpayers.

  4. This is fine as long as their EBT card amount is reduced by the amount it costs to feed their kids.

  5. What about the parents who dont have EBT and pack PB & J everyday for their kids! Isn't it fair that they get variety? Get off the WELFARE BASHING BUS and think about the children!

  6. This bill is so stupid. Either food stamps, or free school meals, but not both. Should have known this comes from a liberal democrat trying to get re-elected by giving away free food with the taxpayers's money.

I hope the governor veto's this bill.

  7. That'll be the new stigma...going to a "free lunch" school.

  8. I agree about one or the other. Where is the sense in paying for the same meals for the same kids twice?
