Md.'s Tubman wins ballot for place on $20 bill

Voters have spoken, and Maryland's own Harriet Tubman, who led slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad, should replace President Andrew Jackson as the face of the $20 bill.

The organization Women on 20s conducted the online campaign to get a woman's face on paper money in time for the 2020 centennial of their right to vote. Secretary of the Treasury Jacob Lew can make the change on his own authority. President Barack Obama is on record as supporting a change, and there are bills in both houses of Congress that would establish committees to study such a change.

"I think it will happen, I really do," said the group's executive director, Susan Ades Stone. "There is a strong feeling that this is overdue. It is very hard to make an argument against it."

  2. I am all for updating our money, it looks ugly compared to other countries, like Canada and Australia. They have beautiful pictures of animals and geography.
So with this vote were going to put an animal on our twenty.

  5. It cost money to change the money, we are in debt.

  6. Harriet Tubman only helped a small portion of the population - so she's a hero to that sector of the population.

Andrew Jackson was a president during the beginning of our nations fledgling years and had influence of the entire country - what it was and what it became.

This is a crappy idea - let's put Bruce Jenner's picture on the new three dollar bill while we're at it!

  7. Well the Bruce Jenner thing is funny, but The way things are going I can see LGBT AND OBAMA money coming our way. In a way many are spending Obama money now while they chat on their Obama phones.

  12. Who said there should be a change to the 20 dollar bill? How about maybe on the 20 dollar " I owe you, take it out of my Government benefits" bill.

  13. agree 1:45 pm. Makes you think that maybe people's perception of the "President of the U.S.A." doesn't feel as IMPORTANT as it should be.

I think other countries laugh at us with such stupidity.

There are just some things that you don't mess with...This is one of them!

  18. Wouldn't surprise me if Obama pushed it through before his term is finally up. Just one more FU to our country. Majority is supposed to rule, it's only fair.

  19. Soon it will be Barack looking for his own place on the currency; how about the penny; it's about all he is worth!!

  20. Not the stupidest idea to come down the pike lately, but right there in the top 5.
    Harriet Tubman?
SHE is the equal of Ben Franklin? Thomas Jefferson? Washington? Jackson?
Her one claim to fame is NOT worthy of spending HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS of OUR MONEY to make another politically correct move.
I can see Hillary taking credit, or worse, nominating a Hispanic woman (she can't stop pandering), and I can see Obama putting a muslim woman up for the honor, as he seems to be more aware than most of all the significant muslim contributions to the building of this great Christian nation.
    Goofs.

  22. Her actions were for her race not our country. I don't agree with this. Our currency should be reserved for people who have made major contributions for the country.

  29. Let's connect the dots...

Mrs. Bill Clinton wants to run for president, again.

Some ad hoc group comes out of the woodwork with the notion that we need the image of a woman, any woman, on a piece of currency.

Coincidence; not likely. Just more marketing for Mrs. Bill Clinton.

BTW, Martha Washington, Susan B. Anthony and Sacagawea have been or currently are on our money.
Martha was on a $1.00 Silver Certificate a number of years back.

    Next case.
