WASHINGTON - An Amtrak train that derailed in Philadelphia killing seven people was traveling more than 100 mph as it approached a curve where the speed limit is just 50 mph, federal investigators said.
Robert Sumwalt, a National Transportation Safety Board member, said that a preliminary review determined the train was traveling 106 mph as the engineer applied the emergency brake about 9:20 p.m.Tuesday. Three seconds later, just before the entire train derailed, the train had slowed to 102 mph.
The train should have been traveling just 50 mph as it entered the curve, Sumwalt said.
Safety measures that prevent a train from exceeding posted limits, known as positive train controls, were not installed along the track. The NTSB has called for the installation of such controls for years and Congress has mandated that the systems be implemented by the end of the year, Sumwalt said.

Wonder if this could be a terrorist attack and cover up from the Obama administration.
ReplyDeleteLots of charges for the engineer(s).
ReplyDeleteGonna be interesting with an engineer who suffered a head injury claiming no memory.
ReplyDeleteWith respect for the loss of the 7 lives, it's a government run entity - what could possibly go wrong? Sell Amtrak to the private sector.
ReplyDeleteJob openings!
ReplyDeleteEngineer feel asleep I bet!
ReplyDeleteMaybe if we invested in our infrastructure, we could actually have SAFE high-speed trains.
ReplyDeleteAmtrak is another business subsidized by the government. Get govt out of helping businesses including with their advertising. Let them promote and operate themselves. If they don't succeed it's their own fault, not the taxpayers. In this case, it looks like the engineer was at fault. Of course, the dems will blame repubs now for cutting their budget. They shouldn't be included in the govt's budget!
ReplyDeletesomehow we have to be able to blame this on obama.

Don't be stupid. I know it hard when you are a product of the dumbed down "education" system but at least try to come off as if you have some intelligence.
You can invest in the infrastructure until the cows come home, but there will always be human error and/or negligence.
Are you getting it Genius?
why is there not a speed retard on these trains they should not be allowed to go over the speed limit?
ReplyDelete9:37 AM - The PTC (Positive Train Control) system is designed to automatically stop a train that is exceeding the safe speed limit. This system has been mandated by Congress yet they refuse to provide funding. That is a failure of infrastructure spending.
ReplyDeletefry this pos!
ReplyDeleteBostian’s also a noted “gay”-rights activist who once lived in San Francisco. In a previous interview with the Midtown Gazette, he said: “It’s kind of insulting to have to beg people for my right to marry. I feel like we shouldn’t even have to have this fight.”
And Gay Star News reported Bostian’s social media pages include several “likes” for LGBT pages and organizations, and he was an active participant in the battle against Proposition 8, the California referendum defining marriage as between one man and one woman.
Conductor driving double the allowed speed limit for the curve? Provide a billion dollars for more infrastructure. Makes since Obama. FFS, these clowns can't wait for an idiot to do something stupid, so they can raise taxes and throw money into certain peoples pockets.
