Ben Carson: I'm sorry for my comments on prisons and homosexuality

Ben Carson is apologizing for suggesting that "a lot of people who go into prison straight" come out gay.

OnWednesday evening the retired pediatric neurosurgeon and newly announced 2016 Republican candidate walked back comments he made in a CNN interview that aired early Wednesday.

"Because a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight -- and when they come out, they're gay," Carson originally said. "So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question."

In a statement to CNN's Carol Costello Wednesday night, he apologized after facing harsh criticism for his words.

"I realized that my choice of language does not reflect fully my heart on gay issues," Carson said. "I do not pretend to know how every individual came to their sexual orientation. I regret that my words to express that concept were hurtful and divisive. For that I apologize unreservedly to all that were offended."

  1. I'm sorry for your chances at a presidency. Truth is.....the more he talks the less he helps himself.

  2. He has no background that qualifies him for President. He is a very qualified individual and very intelligent. I have read his books and recommend them for good reading. He is a very well grounded man with high morals but having said all that... does that qualify him for president? We must use our brain while voting ..not our emotional leanings.

  3. Maybe not him. But a god fearing american patriot that is not a politician needs to be elected. A mans man. One who cares less of politics and more of America.

  4. 5:20 why would we want a person that is "very intelligent" and is "very well grounded...with high moral values" to become president? That is crazy. Look how good the one we have now is doing.

  5. I don't know, 4:38. It could be calculated. He's letting the conservatives know his viewpoint. That accounts for a lot if the conservatives unite. The more politics I watch, the more I notice that things are planned out.

5:20, you negated yourself by calling him qualified then asking if he was qualified. Um... Quite a few US Presidents fall into the camp of coming from the same background of Carson. If you read his books, then you know that he was also a professor at Hopkins. Ten US presidents were also Professors. Many also questioned Reagan for his former career as an actor. I'd rather have someone in office with strong convictions to getting the American Dream back on track than a career politician.

  8. Commenting on previous comments-Is he not more qualified than the muslim in charge now? At least he has accomplished something in his life besides being a "community organizer". I'll take Ben over hussien anytime.

  9. "I'll take Ben over hussien anytime."

I agree, but that's not setting the bar very high.

  14. OK.... having read all the counter comments to my original post (5:20) I can say that I really hope Ben Carson, if he runs, chooses a running mate with an international affairs background. I think he is qualified as a decent human being with little political experience. The Washington tricksters and political liars will be a force to recon with for certain. If he can meet them with force and NO corruption I applaud him. I met Ben Carson at Hopkins and was very impressed with everything about this man. I had already read one of his books but was not prepared for the compassion I observed with my child. If he is prepared to face the nasty and corrupt world of politics ..more power to him.

  16. Back to the basics, prisons are too crowded because of the same reason the IRS rarely does audits. There is simply not enough funding to take care of basic issues. We are being attacked internally and externally and the rest of the world continues to beg us for help.Let me give an example;would you help the homeless masses before you would help your own children and their families? I didn't think so.Niether would I.
