Georgetown, DE – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a single vehicle crash that killed a Georgetown man earlier this morning.
The incident occurred around 1:10 a.m. this morning, Thursday February 12, 2015, as Benadigto Bonilla-Berduo, 19 of Georgetown, was operating a 2002 Volkswagen GTI, westbound on County Seat Highway (US9) approximately one mile west of Old Furnace Road at an apparent high rate of speed. While attempting to negotiate a moderate right curve, the Volkswagen crossed into the eastbound lanes and exited the south side of the road. Bonilla-Berduo attempted to regain control the vehicle before it crossed both lanes and exited the north side of the road where he again over-corrected, resulting in the vehicle to rotate counter-clockwise as it exited the south side of the road once again. The passenger's side of the vehicle struck a utility pole, snapping the pole in half, and vaulting the vehicle into the air prior to it coming to a stop on its roof.
Benadigto Bonilla-Berduo was not properly restrained and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. Alcohol and speed are considered factors in this collision. US9 in the area of Sussex Technical High School was closed for approximately three hours while Delaware Electric Cooperative crews worked to restore power and the crash was investigated and cleared.
