Mayor Expresses Disappointment with Chamber Decision

Salisbury - Mayor James Ireton, Jr. today voiced his disappointment at the news that the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce has chosen to cancel the popular Salisbury Festival after 32 years.

In a post on their website earlier today, WMDT reported that the Chamber of Commerce had not given any reason for the cancellation.

“It’s a major surprise, but not something we can't get over,” said Mayor Ireton. “The Salisbury Festival has been a staple of our lives for over three decades. I think most of our citizens are going to be scratching their heads, wondering why this tradition has to come to such an unceremonious end. The release from the Chamber was vague, yet we are holding out hope that they have recently brought another event onto the radar for late October 2015. Additionally, we were immediately contacted by the Jaycees about a possible event during the original date of the 2015 Festival.”

While the spring will now be without its usual centerpiece event, the Mayor pointed to the increasingly popular 3rd Friday events held monthly, as well as other key Downtown successes, such as the newly launched 1st Saturdays, the NYE Ball Drop and the opening of Headquarters Live and The Brick Room which are making the City’s core an ever more attractive destination.

“There is a limited pool of volunteers and talent,” said the Mayor. “With so much going on that pool must be stretched. I'm not worried—I see more energy downtown now than at any time in the past 30 years.

“We now have an event on almost the same scale as the Salisbury Festival every single month. With all of the momentum Downtown, we see nothing but cause for celebration. I’m sure the Chamber feels the same way.”

Publishers Notes: I had spoken to Council President Jake Day referencing this event several weeks ago. I had expressed to him how I had heard they were cancelling the event and Jake assured me the Chamber was in fact going to continue the event but they were changing the date towards the fall. This is an unfortunate announcement. Nevertheless, a lot of what the Mayor says is true and promising for Downtown Salisbury. For ADULTS, that is. It kind of reminds me of when Mike Dunn cancelled the Festival of Lights AND the Salisbury Fireworks. Let's see, Ireton has no children. Dunn has no children. Day has no children. Let's have a beer.

  2. Don't you think it lost popularity because of the clientele it was attracting? Goes hand-in-hand with post about fighting at the Centre. Thugs everywhere spoiling our way of life. Dealing with that needs to be a priority over opening more bars.

    That's why I don't go anymore.

Now let's point the blame. Who's fault do you think it is as to why the Salisbury Festival kept inviting the thugs from around Salisbury?

Well let's see now. Could it be the bands they were booking? Did they ever showcase talent like Randy Lee Ashcraft? No, I think one year he was there, but it was on a side street.

They kept booking bands like Smitty. Free entertainment with their kind of music? That's a no brainer! I personally complained every year that this was the reason the thugs kept showing up. This was the reason the little gangs were attacking people and fighting among others.

Other people kept complaining and I do believe I saw people making comments on this blog. This blog had numerous complaints about the thugs, I mean clientele. I do know that the people from the Chamber do read this blog so it' obvious they don't care.

Well now who's fault is it? It is the Chambers own fault for not listening. It's the Chambers fault for not paying attention. All they had to do was book and showcase Country bands of bands like Randy Lee Ashcraft and the problem would have been solved. I'm not a big fan of RLA so this isn't a free plug, just my example. With that said the Chamber is the number 1 reason for helping downtown Salisbury lose such an important event.

  7. I was told the mayor went off the other day on a Chamber Member at the Chamber and embarrassed himself in front of a crowd. Some are saying this decision was based around the mayors behavior.

Why would you give him the honor of calling him Mayor? He wouldn't make a pimple of a real mayor's butt. It's Jim Ireton, please refer to him as that.

  9. If you went to the last 3, you know why it's time to cancel the future ones!

    "Dat's" all I'm saying...

  10. Look, it's not the Mayor's fault. This has been in the making for some time now. No more Salisbury Festival & no more Pork in The Park. But, wait for it, something else big is coming.

  13. Drunks, Druggies, Gangs, non - Family atmosphere, especially after dark, inappropriate language around young children, being knocked around while trying to move through the walking areas.
What is there to explain why they canceled such a great family night out.

  14. 557-Randy Lee Ashcraft was and is a schmuck that never accomplished anything, outside of being a local celeb. Hell, his kid sister has done more than he ever has. Booking a loser like that does nothing, and certainly doesn't draw a crowd! lol

  15. Wow 7:19. I'm sure you've accomplished a lot in life with your judgemental attitude.

You are an idiot. You would never be anything like RLA and he has had more success than you will ever have. Obviously you can't read because the commenter said he/she wasn't a fan, but using the band as an example. GTH loser!

  17. Maybe that commenter is one of Randy's many wives.

  18. 5:57 Are you kidding? Smitty's music does NOT attract "troubled youth". It's alternative rock, blues crossover and so on, which is good for at least +15 Repel Trouble. Granted, country music is at least a +20 Dispel Mobs, and anything with banjos worth a solid +35 Scatter Thugs.

Hey, that's the solution, bluegrass bands to ward off the problems. Dueling Banjos in stereo from each end of the streets!
