Ireton Supports Fredericksen on School Decision

Salisbury – Mayor James Ireton, Jr. today voiced his support of Wicomico Superintendent of Schools John Fredericksen’s decision to keep schools closed again on Friday.

In a statement released this past Monday, February 16th, Mayor Ireton anticipated the difficulty of cleaning the City’s 350 lane miles of streets after the storm, stating, “After the snow ceases to fall, cold temperatures will be the main concern for the continued plowing and improvement in road conditions.  With nighttime temperatures below 10 degrees, it may take the remainder of the week for road conditions to return to normal.”

Again today, the Mayor addressed the condition of City roads, and voiced his support for Dr. Fredericksen.  “As the week has progressed, temperatures have remained very low, with wind chills hitting negative digits,” said the Mayor.  “My biggest concern is the safety of students.  Dr. Fredericksen has made the decision to keep children out of the cold, and to give County and City roads another day to improve.  I applaud his decision, and I support it 100 percent.”

In Brief:
  • Mayor Ireton supports Dr. Fredericksen’s decision to keep schools closed on Friday because it is the correct choice to keep kids safe.
  • Snow emergency routes receive the most attention because that’s how emergency vehicles get to you.
  • Salt will not melt ice at temperatures below 20° F.
  • With the first calendar day of spring over a month away, the possibility of more winter weather is very real.

  8. So courageous of the mayor to give public kudos to his employer. Citizens should be duly impressed when the decision of the superintendent meets the standards of a teacher with his reputation.

  9. The mayor has to support his employer on one side of the fence while arguing with him over the City County Agreement on the other side of the fence. No conflict of interest there.

That's part of the reason. The teachers and administrator get a free day off when school is closed due to weather conditions. They are not charged for the 2 hour school delays either. These teachers and BOE employees have it made and they never ever took a furlough and they are getting pay raises while County, City and state employees aren't.

Yes that $1 Million dollar Tower ladder truck is out of service because of a driving mishap. How come we haven't heard about that?
