A Letter To The Editor: Wicomico County BOE Waste

Joe,

Good morning. I enjoy reading your blog... thank you for keeping the community informed.

I thought I'd pass along another example of our great BOE's waste of taxpayer's money. In light of our financial situation it is beyond me how money is continually put toward unnecessarily extravagant items. The latest that has come to my attention is a fully funded trip to Florida for 2 BOE employees to attend a conference regarding the "summer program". They left 2/17, returned 2/22 or 2/23. Flights, hotels, meals paid for. How much could this have cost the taxpayers of Wicomico County? Not to mention the same two employees have been on other "conferences" together in the past which required flights/mileage/hotels/meals... Is traveling up and down the east coast really necessary? They also frequent local "establishments" during the summer months under the guise of "meeting to write curriculum", no doubt this is written off as an "expense".

  1. Yea it is probably written off as an expense because it is “AN EXPENSE" Sorry all businesses send their employees on road trips. They also pay their expenses because they are working during the trip. As a business person, I am more than happy to send an employee to something that will improve my business and the employees therein. So, unless you are saying they were just hanging out in Florida for fun on the company tab, you have no argument here.

  2. They didn't use much in the way of taxpayer money because they already have credit and gift cards to pay for stuff.

  3. Most likely it was paid for by a grant and it was required that they be there.Sounds like Title I money to me.

  4. Grant, no doubt. WCBOE has cracked the whip on out of town conferences due to just what you mentioned. Fellow teachers have paid out of pocket and used personal days to speak at conferences that they were asked to attend.

  5. WCBOE just needs to play better with others or they should get a time out and no recess.

  6. Based on wages, salaries, and benefits of BOE employee's including Teachers and Administrators, stick it where the sun don't shine!!

Most of us have to pay out of pocket for anything extra like Christmas dinners and a summer picnic. We have fundraisers throughout the year and 50/50 raffles to offset the cost of dinners fully paid by the employees.
I don't feel one damn bit sorry for you! If you don't like it, for god sake leave. You have it good and you know it!

  7. Is Wicomico the only county in Md that has major BOE issues?

  9. 3:43 you can run your business any way you want but the BOE isn't a business. You telling me they have to send people to confrences to figure out how to run their summer programs? BS it's tax payer money they are spending and they don't give a damn how much they spend.

    1. What folks refuse to accept on here is mandates and regulations , required by the state and the federal governments.. School funding comes from Federal, State, and County. Federal and State will cut funding if mandates and regulations are not followed.

Some one asked me today if I knew how many schools were in the county. I was shocked to hear the answer. Had no idea there were that many. WCBOE is plenty busy to keep all aspects of the system running smoothly

Boy John Fredericksen was quick to respond on this wasn't he!!

Guess what Freddy? Most businesses have cut back and can't afford these so called business trips so your little cover is blown. For someone with a PhD you are pretty dumb.

Oh by the way what is your so called business? Wink, Wink.

  13. To the business man your people bring money to your business so it would be worth it for you to pay. If I have to pay for it I wouldn't want it to happen. In this electronic age teleconferencing is the way to go do it on a professional day. Some of the location are very expensive any one have the nerve to post how much they get for meals, hotel, transportation and salary 20-30 dollars a hour.
