  2. During services for a LODD, I don't understand the point being made. I think it's an honorable thing to do, just as vehicles and personnel went to LODD funerals for police officers and FF in PA, NY, NJ, VA, etc, etc, etc. Again, so what's the point you're making?????????

  3. Dave, did you guys pony up for the gas? Considering the SFD charges Pittsville thousands of dollars and Ireton is trying to get money from the County, it's a fair article.

  4. Why didn't they volunteer their services to stand by and take personal vehicles to Bel Air. Doing this on the tax payers dime isn't exactly honorable.

  6. I'd be surprised if 10 people show up at my funeral.

  7. You have no military experience, never worked as a cop, fireman or paramedic so you definitely deserve the right to open your big mouth about this. You have no class. And I signed my name, see if you post this!

  8. It is honorable for brethren to attend a funeral. The folks who feel compelled should request to have their schedule arranged to accommodate such. Sending a truck loaded with paid personnel, as honorable as it is, is a slippery slope. How do you decide which to attend? How far do you travel? How far is too far? At what cost?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Why couldn't they make the trip in a nice fuel efficient mini-van?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Judging by the FF post it looks like they tried to make it all about themselves. If they were doing the honorable they wouldn't have posted the pic. All it is is a look at me, I'm the FF of bel air pic.

  11. What the problem is ? I think it was an honorable thing to do. No matter what anyone does there are some who will bash anyone for doing anything. They are usually. The ones who do totally nothing. Get over it and get a life. Good job SFD, much respect .

  12. You and your minions have no idea about how the fire service operates in this world let alone the U.S.A. If any of you had bothered to read and it would be just like SBYNEWS to not include all the facts, The SFD has a member that is from BEL AIR. I am pretty sure this was done out of respect 1st for the BEL AIR Fire Department and 2nd because the SFD has a member that is from BEL AIR. This type of generosity is performed worldwide in the fire service. Quit Drinking SBYNEWS a kool-Aide and do your own research. The fire service is very rich in tradition and this is only part of it.
Let's see if this is posted.

    1. So if a ff from Chicago moves here are we to send a turck and crew there? Are they attending the funral or manning the station? Is Salisbury the closet available? And why should my deficit tax money pay for them to man their firestation? I fully understand the brotherhood to attend but not to send, as a city resident, my equipment and my paid out wages to cover someone that distance. As a resident tax payer that is MY equipment NOT the fire depts.

      Delete
    2. Chicago? Apples and oranges. Really. Folks. Wanna hate on the ff's be close with the pitches.

      Delete
    3. I am not hatting on any ff's. I don't appreciate the fact they felt it was necessary to take a $750,000+ piece of equipment on a 280 mile trip increasing the wear and tear on it using my deficit tax money soin a couple years it needs to be replaced with tax dollars, which are not there in this economy, by incrreasing fees for service or my tax load thus taking food off of my and my childrens table to pay for the latest in tecnology to pump water through a hose to put out a fire! Salisbury could have just as well been represented using one of the assistant chiefs cars! You will not convince me the closet standby units available were 140 miles away, that is a very large area to be fighting fires with less than skeletal equipment and crews!!

  13. They had to find A fill in crew as good at burning stuff down as themselves.

  18. 4:19: The question being asked is were any members paid to do this? Second question is were city taxes dollars used for the fuel to get there? If either are true then its wrong. This has nothing to do with how fire service operates.

    1. Doesn't matter if the cities gas was used. Not one person said a word about the dead cops. All of you. Stfu. And the ff's stand for leos....where is the leos standing for the ff's on this matter? Oh that's right. Cops are only our brothers when it suits them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Would've been honorable had they volunteered. How can you justify paying 5 FF (particularly when you just eliminated a couple paid positions in the recent past) and sending Salisbury's equipment and all the fuel costs to get there and back? Lame SFD and even lamer to publicize it and risk pissing people off...

    ReplyDelete

    1. Exactly. It would honorable if they did it out of kindness on their own time and resources, not for their own glory to be big city firefighters for a day with a look at me post.

  23. 4:19-Everyone is certainly aware of how generosity works as people are volunteering their time and costing themselves money in the meantime doing good deeds. Being generous means giving of your own time with no compensation.
It seems you are saying the fire service operates by being generous on tax payers money.
That's one hell of a note.

  28. There were other stations closer by to Bel Air that could have covered for them. I have no problem with SFD members going to a funeral. I have a problem with them taking a truck that probably gets less then 5 mpg and the wear and tear on the truck.
Oh yeah. WHAT IF there is a large fire in Salisbury. We need that equipment and personnel. That is what they always tell us.

  33. INTERESTING how so many of you are FREAKING OUT over an article YOU put up on Facebook.

FUNNY how defensive so many of you have become because YOU BLOGGED YOURSELVES.

As for the Idiots commenting the MILITARY does the same for their brothers and sisters. Listen VERY closely to me. YOU ARE NOT MILITARY. You are NOT owned by the GOVERNMENT, like our Soldiers are. YOU are NOT placed in harms way 24/7. YOU are NOT shot at at any waking moment, overseas DEFENDING Americans. YOU are NOTHING like our fine men and women serving, yes, even you, in our military, so cut the bullsh!t.

Our HERO's in the military make on average $18,000.00 a year, a$$wipes. Do YOU drive down City roads dodging bullets or IED's?

Not to mention our Soldiers go WHEREVER THEY ARE TOLD, not where they choose. Their Families are separated for very long periods of time, not just in a 24 or 48 hour shift. They do NOT have civilian freedom.

I am absolutely sick and tired of rejecting your HERO comments comparing yourselves to Police or Military.

As for the threats to me personally and my Family and our properties, screw you. I insured our properties because of a-holes like some of you.

280 miles on a Fire Truck in one outing. That's a LOT of wear and tear on one of OUR vehicles.

According to the comments I've seen, I'd say the next time take a chase vehicle and let someone else close by cover that Station. Someone said to me, I wonder how many OTHER Fire Departments stood around taking pictures acting like they too went there to cover for the Station in Bel Air. Good question.

So ALL of you know, this means the following.

A house fire that is already lost. No need to send firefighters inside because it's a total loss burning to the ground.

So, you want to threaten me, eh? You want to come and burn our HOME down, kill me, my Wife, our Grandson and all of our animals now, interesting.

    Yeah, some kind of HERO's!

Learn to be accountable for your actions. Don't post things on facebook so you can boost your ego then get pissed that people don't respond by putting you on a pedestal.

    ReplyDelete
  47. 8:29, I'm going to defend 8:17's comment. I remember doing a walk through and all the money they had spend on a custom washer and dryer for their uniforms. It wasn't for their dress uniforms. It was for the heavy duty ones you see in the picture. So you are out of line calling them stupid. This time you'll need to look in a mirror.

  65. 10:58 Compare how much gas a vehicle or bike uses against a fire truck. One police car or 4 bikes out of service does not effect the service of the department. Taking a major piece of equipment from the city DOES! When you asked for the boat and more firemen all we heard was....what if....what if there was a fire at a house on the water......what if there was a major fire in Salisbury and there were not enough firemen. Well WHAT IF there was a major fire in Salisbury while this piece of equipment was way out of the area. You can't continue to waste funds and expect people to still support you. They are having enough problems supporting themselves.

I've seen some pretty goods also.

    This is my opinion :
I don't care why they are there, but I do believe the equipment from the city of Salisbury is not necessary .
A lot of you guys are way off , talking about the military.
The Fire Dept. is not the military nor should it be compared to it.
911 was long time ago , those firemen were heroes , now all firemen are considered heroes ?
    I don't think so !
They are not police men either , maybe some think they are.
I believe they have crippled the cities with all the BS they think they deserve.

  68. Let me explain something to the FD lovers :
    1. most cities only need about 1/10 of the fire equipment they have.
    2. 98% of all FD calls are for medical reasons.
    3. when there is a fire , most of the dwellings or structures are a total loss.
    4. most fire equipment is replaced because of technology , not because it is failing.
    5. most FD have volunteers that could do the job without paid men.
    6. and last , they are the BS artists of the century.

    ReplyDelete
  69. There are some things that you cant explain to the average citizen. Salisbury did the respectable thing and for the right reasons. Anyone familiar with Emergency services knows the procedure in a time of Line of Duty Deaths. If a similar situation were to happen in this area I would fully expect to see units from all over the State offering their services. You are best served to cease the anger and stop replying here. 70. As someone who lost their Dad last year, an ex fire chief, I find this whole post offensive. The service the local fire companies held was of great comfort to my Mom and family.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Bryan, with all due respect, I disagree and allow me to explain why.

A chase vehicle I might be able to accept. However, to EXPECT a Fire Department located 140 miles away to bring a ladder truck to cover them is a line of bull, you know it and I know it.

IO understand the whole, you go, I go thing. Some are coming on here saying the gas was paid for, BS! So you guys are telling me if a similar situation happened here in Salisbury, we can expect to pay for all the gas from stations as far away as Bel Air?

I don't care how you look at this one, the SFD looks like a bunch of rogue out of control Firefighters who have no respect for the equipment we provide.

As for the commenter who says I should shut up because I don't pay taxes in Salisbury, I paid around $12,000.00 a year up until recently for 7 years, YOU SHUT UP. YOU don't even live in the City, nor does the majority of Firefighters. I've paid my dues.

  73. Joe,
I follow your blog and many times I don't agree but we can always agree to disagree. The personal attacks are not necessary from anyone. I am a former member of a fire company so I have seen it from the inside. There is a brotherhood but it only comes out during funerals. There is so much back stabbing, cheating, lying and petty stuff that goes on that I would hope people wouldn't do to their real family. Also, my current employer has discouraged us, as employees, from participating in conversations such as this or social media, as it is a representation of us as well as their company. To see some of the comments of these fire fighters and then to see Bryan Records post, only continues to tarnish the image of SFD. They create their own image by doing stupid things like this. Maybe not stupid that they went to support a member that was from Bel Air, but why take pictures for Facebook, why take the city owned truck, and then why come on here and attack those that don't agree. You have created your own image SFD and other local fire departments. Not it is your responsibility to clean that up.

This person is referring to David Cox. Just because they were not prosecuted does not mean they didn't do the crime. LMFAO. Very well respected members or who's community and what fire service? Anyone that respects that criminal David Cox has a mental issue. Oh, you did forget to mention that he wasn't innocent and they didn't give him his fake police car back. Had to drive around in a beat up pick up truck for a while. Shame on Rick Hoppes for hiring him back. That left a scar on our community and our fire service. That is one of the many times Rick Hoppes should have been fired. And this is another!

That's right people, these guys are volunteers, NOT BEING PAID!!! No, as a FF you would never attempt to use another company's fire apparatus. Every fire engine/truck is equipped differently, and different departments use different brands and styles of equipment.

    ReplyDelete
  80. 8:41, I may be wrong here but I don't recall anyone complaining about paying Firefighters to be there. I believe the main complaint is abusing the use of a ladder truck, mileage and fuel.

    However, you call yourselves PROFESSIONALS?

Let's see. If I borrow my neighbors riding mower, power washer, etc. are you suggesting I won't know how to use it? Mind you, I didn't spend YEARS in training like YOU people have but I think I could figure it out WITHOUT any training. Mind you, this might not be the best example but I think you get my drift.

For me personally, I think you are full of crap about, "Every fire engine/truck is equipped differently, and different departments use different brands and styles of equipment". The Fire Department is full of EXCUSES and I doubt many will buy that BS.

  81. Regarding the MSP going to the funerals in NY, please know what you are talking about before you speak. A local charter bus company in Baltimore donated AND PAID FOR one of their own buses to provide transportation for the Troopers to attend the funeral. That is a FACT. All Troopers rode the bus together and there was no cost to the state or the taxpayers. Don't believe me? Check it out for yourself.

  82. Another fact regarding the MSP and the NY funerals, all Troopers who attended volunteered to go and were on THEIR OWN TIME. Again, no cost to the tax payers.

  83. I scratch my head on the purpose of this post. You trash the SFD for helping another fire company during a funeral. A company that has a member who also serves in Salisbury and a department in the state of Maryland. A common practice for departments cross our nation and your questioning it. Your views certainly prove that you have never served in any public service organization and have no compassion for your fellow man. Perhaps you should call the BelAir Vol. Fire Company today and get their views on this situation. I'm pretty sure you will be an informed citizen after doing so.

  84. You people should educate yourselves before commenting. All local Harford County companies were already involved in the funeral, either covering other stations already, or sending entire memberships to the viewings and funerals. So its common practice to look outside one's normal mutual aid. Second, Bel Air's rigs weren't even at their station. The fallen firefighter was from 2 stations, one in Harford and one in Howard County. Bel Air's rigs had to travel back and forth for 2 viewings and the funeral. So taking a solar powered car there from SFD would have done no good.

  86. The SFD assisted the Bel Air Fire Dept. as two of SFD's member are or were part of that department for many years. In LODD's there are no boundaries or county lines. We must come together to support each other. Further NO ONE was paid a dime to go and support the BAVFC, and fuel was covered by the BAVFC. There is no danger to the city with one ladder truck gone as there was still one truck and a tower in Salisbury.

I think we should all take a hard look at ourselves and think what the men and women of the SFD, Salisbury PD, and any other department. We all take them for granted until we need them. This folks spend countless hours and holidays away from their families and loved ones to protect us.

When one of there own dies in the line of duty it is just the right thing to do! I think we should be focusing on how to improve public safety in our area and not focusing on several providers going and spending one day helping a fellow department.

  87. 1:59, Public Safety starts by NOT taking a monstrous ladder truck 140 miles, (each way) on ICY roads. Yes, the roads were very icy that way during their trip.

As for supporting your own, do it on your own dime and not at taxpayers expense, is all I've been saying.

As for your feel sorry for us story, this is the real world Pal and taxpayers are hurting. Sell your story to the ONLY people who support this move, your own firefighters. No One Else agrees.

There, noting little men, MY NAME is on my comment.

  92. Define irony. A volunteer member who recently just criticized the career staff for driving around outside their first due area(in the city of salisbury), increasing fuel costs and wear and tear on equipment. Just so happens to be the "officer in charge" on a ladder truck going on a 280 mile road trip, plus going on calls while there. And it does put the city of salisbury and its citizens at risk, being that the volunteers fail to get out on calls more and more as it is. Then you go and take one of the two ladder trucks that may have a chance of getting out of the building staffed if there was a fire. Baltimore, Howard, Anne arundel, PG, Charles, hell even Frederick counties have plenty of rigs to choose from. I'll support supporting your own, but not at that cost

    January 19, 2015 at 3:50 AM

I am a paid firefighter and I have to agree with you. I am so sick of the BS that I have been looking for a new job.

Preserve the memory of a man that gave his life serving the public and know your department did the honorable thing.

Do you pay taxes in the City of Salisbury??

I didn't think so!! With that said you have absolutely no say in this and absolutely no reason to defend the wrong doing of the Salisbury Fire Department and that corrupt decisions with our money.

David Cox can not legally volunteer his service to his employer without getting the City of Salisbury in trouble. Not only was it a waste of fuel it put a fire truck/ladder truck out of service for many hours. It also put unnecessary wear and tear on the fire truck when the city already has multiple fire apparatus and ambulances out of service every single day of the week. The tax payers are paying thousands upon thousands of dollars in hard earned tax dollars on repairs. This corruption has to end.

Hey Butthole we are not talking about Baltimore City and the MSP and I doubt seriously you pay state taxes. How do you pay state taxes?

No it's not all or none. In Salisbury it better be none and I can guarantee you in 2015 Jake Day and Jim Ireton will have to answer to this waste if they want to get re-elected.
