Great post.I saw 2 that may have been realism paintings,but they brought back great memories.
ReplyDeleteI'm 78 years old and worked in a gas station when I was a kid that was really great to see.
ReplyDeleteSimpsons towing in salisbury had a full service gulf station were the eagle express market is now across from auto zone on rt 13 north.I can see bob now [the owner of both the gas station and the tow business who is in his 80,s now coming to the window asking which fuel you wanted and the 3 choices were good gulf,gulf no nox,or gulf crest.Great days then in salisbury.Thanks for the saturday memory.
ReplyDeleteI worked in a general store in a very small town in the mid sixties during my junior high and high school years. Out front were two Gulf gas pumps and the banjo sign you see in the post. Part of the job was to clean the windshield, offer to check the oil, radiator fluid and tire air pressures. Inside we sold auto supplies, tires, fresh groceries and canned goods, fresh meats carved on site, tobacco products, hardware and fresh-scooped ice cream cones.
ReplyDeleteWhen a man wanted to buy condoms, he was ushered to the store's floor safe by the manager/owner. When a woman bought sanitary napkins or tampons, they were immediately put into a small paper bag at the counter before checkout even began. One part of the store building was living quarters for the owner's maiden aunt, who worked in the store for her entire adult life.
No tips. The hourly wage was 90 cents, and a few years later, $1.25.
