Common Over-the-Counter Medicines Linked to Dementia in New Study

Common over-the-counter drugs such as Benadryl may be linked to dementia, according to a new study published this week in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Researchers at University of Washington and a nonprofit called Group Health followed 3,434 adults over age 65 for more than seven years. None of them had dementia or Alzheimer's disease when the study started, and they kept careful records about the drugs they took. The researchers found that people who took more anticholinergic drugs -- which affect the nervous system and are in antihistamines and some bladder control medications -- were more likely to develop dementia.

The link has been studied before but this is an especially good study, said Dr. James Leverenz, a neurologist who directs the Cleveland Center for Brain Health at the Cleveland Clinic and was not party of the new study.

"People want to be very careful about what kind of medicines they taking or if they already have some issues with their thinking skills," Leverenz said. "I knew when I first start taking [antihistamines] for allergies, I feel a little clouded and sleepy. Some of that is the anticholinergic effect in the brain."

  1. surrrrrrrrrre its harmful. Just like eggs, butter, and all that other crap they used to spew out and have since rescinded. I don't believe a damn thing. I can give you a topic and no one will agree on it.

Saw an article on CBS news tonight where a pediatrician will NOT take patients who refuse to take the measles vaccine. When asked how many people changed their minds about taking the vaccine after listening to his advice - he answered "none". The reporter asked him what do they say to him and the doctor said his patients have told him they believe the internet more than someone who has been practicing for over 20 years. You know - its what's told on the street. Has more creed than real Professionals. Damn shame how ignorant people are.

  3. 8:09 and that damn shame includes you.

All doctors do is regurgitate what they are told by big corporations.
They use you as a guinea pig and dispense their newest harmful drugs because without any evidence they are told how great they are.

They are limited by their own lack of experience and knowledge, which is why people go to bigger better more progressive places for help.

There was also a doctor on TV earlier this week saying that the whole measles thing was over blown and a farce.

In the 1960's hundred of thousands got it. Between 2000 - 2011 there were ONLY 900 cases. In 11 years - 900.

This is just another push by big pharma, just like the flu shot - so that ignorance includes you.

Line up for your toxic shot, you can be first.

  4. Some people seem destined to contract any and all illnesses that come down the pike. When one does the math, the treatment of medical conditions is a major part of the economy.Imagine if you will the economic impact that would ensue if suddenly everyone became as healthy as a horse.

  5. 9:24 economic impact?
We could live better and buy what we wanted not being hampered by making the medical non profit corporations rich.

Economically we are suffering due to medical costs. Imagine what it would be like if we were not.

We could actually invest to cure diseases instead of paying big pharma to hide the cure, just so the money cycle keeps working to their benefit.
