He called for patience and a sense of perspective. He said the government is in control of the situation, the AFP reports.
“This is a serious disease, but we can’t give in to hysteria or fear — because that only makes it harder to get people the accurate information they need. We have to be guided by the science. We have to remember the basic facts,” he lectured.
He said if the government takes “the steps that are necessary, if we’re guided by the science — the facts, not fear — then I am absolutely confident that we can prevent a serious outbreak here in the United States, and we can continue to lead the world in this urgent effort.”
Preventing flights arriving from West Africa, however, will not be one of the necessary steps.
“Trying to seal off an entire region of the world — if that were even possible — could actually make the situation worse… Experience shows that it could also cause people in the affected region to change their travel, to evade screening, and make the disease even harder to track.”

Just Guess What Ferguson Police Found on Missouri Democrat Who Has Sponsored Several ‘Anti-Gun’ Bills…
Missouri state Senator Jamilah Nasheed, a Democrat who was sponsored several “anti-gun” bills in her state, was arrested Monday night during a protest outside of the Ferguson Police Department. However, it’s what police officers found on her that is raising eyebrows.
Nasheed was carrying a loaded 9mm handgun and extra rounds of ammunition, according to Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson. She also refused to take a breathalyzer test after officers determined she “smelled strongly of intoxicants,” sources told KMOV-TV.
Nasheed claimed on Tuesday that she was not intoxicated at the time of her arrest and emphasized that she is a legal concealed carry permit holder.

Saudi Arabia Has Stepped Up Public Beheadings, And Some See A Political Message
RIYADH (Reuters) - Immediately after his sword falls, the Saudi Arabian executioner steps backwards to avoid soiling his clothes with the blood of the condemned man, whose headless body can be seen slumping over backwards in the shaky online film.
After perfunctorily checking the white folds of his robe for flecks of red, the executioner wipes his blade with a tissue, which he drops onto the corpse and walks away.
A sudden surge in public executions in Saudi Arabia in the last two months has coincided with a U.S.-led bombing campaign against Islamic State. This has led to inevitable comparisons in Western media between Islamic State's beheadings and those practiced in Saudi Arabia.

NRP Academy Class Graduates, Agency Gains 21 New Officers
The ranks of the Maryland Natural Resources Police grew by 21 with the graduation Saturday of the latest class of recruits.
The new officers took their oath, administered by Col. George F. Johnson IV, NRP superintendent, at Chesapeake College before a large audience of family and friends.
Governor Martin O’Malley congratulated the newest members of NRP in a prerecorded address.
“Your training ensures that as long as you are on the front lines, Maryland’s people, Maryland’s public lands and wildlife will be safer and healthier,” said Governor O’Malley. “Through 146 years this agency’s name has changed and its mission has expanded. But its roots remain deeply embedded in our shared belief that environmental stewardship is a sacred duty.”

Up to 34 MILLION blank 'green cards' and work permits to be ordered ahead of Obama illegal immigrant 'amnesty'
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services plans to seek a vendor to produce as many as 34 million blank work permits and 'green cards' – the paperwork that authorizes illegal immigrants to live and work in the United States – as the White House prepares to issue an executive order after the Nov. 4 midterm elections.
According to a draft solicitation published online, the government agency will look for a company that can produce a minimum 4 million cards per year for five years, and 9 million in the early stages.
President Barack Obama has pledged that he will make a move on immigration reform this year. His original timetable called for a decision by the end of the summer.
Republicans have decried the plan as an 'amnesty' for millions of illegal immigrants, including hundreds of thousands of unaccompanied minors who have come across the U.S.-Mexico border this year.

Drivers Should be Alert for Deer as Activity Increases
Cooling temperatures, colorful leaves and unpredictable deer ─ all surefire signs that fall is upon us. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources urges motorists to be alert for deer and other wildlife as these animals seek fall food supplies and search for mates.
Deer, especially males, are prone to traveling without concern for roadways and automobiles during the fall, which is their breeding season. Motorists need to be especially alert from sunset to dawn as deer are more active during this period.

DNR reminds motorists to:
- Slow down if a deer is crossing the road ahead. Deer often travel in groups and others may be nearby;
- Be alert for deer standing along the shoulder, which may suddenly move into the roadway. Slow down and sound your horn to scare the deer away;
- Slow down and brake to avoid hitting a deer, but do not swerve as this may cause you to lose control of the vehicle, increasing the severity of the accident;
- Be particularly attentive in the early morning and evening when they roam the most; and
- Stay alert and slow down in areas where deer crossing signs are posted, which indicate locations of frequent activity.
Sportscaster fired from TV station after 20 years for wishing departing colleagues good luck live on-air
A veteran TV sportscaster has been fired after he offered best wishes to colleagues who were leaving the station while live on-air.
On two occasions, Joe Swift thanked his co-workers on KNOP-TV in North Platte, Nebraska earlier this month.
Several days later, bosses called him in to say he was fired after he supposedly gave the impression that his friends were forced out of the company.

Vanishing Ocean City With Bunk Mann
The first bridge to carry automobile traffic into Ocean City was approved by the Maryland General Assembly in 1916 but did not officially open until July 4, 1919. Known to locals as the “State Roads Bridge,” it had a single lane in each direction. It crossed the Sinepuxent Bay at its most narrow point and entered Ocean City at Worcester Street in the center of the old downtown.
This bridge was damaged in the Hurricane of 1933 that destroyed the nearby railroad bridge and also created the Inlet. For the three days it took to repair the State Roads Bridge, no automobile traffic was able to enter or leave Ocean City except by the long and sand-covered route through Delaware. The photo above was taken four days after the hurricane in 1933.
The State Roads Bridge was replaced by the current Route 50 Bridge in 1942.
Sex offenders teaming up to run for public office in Minnesota
Sex offenders in a small Minnesota town are trying to get elected into public office, despite not being allowed to visit city hall as they are ruled a danger to society.
The sex offenders are staging a write-in campaign to get elected to city council, and currently make up nearly 20 per cent of voters in Moose Lake, Minnesota.
Hundreds of men are civilly committed at the Moose Lake Sex Offender Treatment Program, as a court has ruled them ‘sexually dangerous’ to society after having served a prison sentence.

Transgender Troops Want Pentagon Ban Lifted

The ACLU Palm Center conference featured transgender service members from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden and the U.K.
Maj. Alexandra Larsson of the Swedish Armed Forces said, “To some degree, it's a very basic human thing. It isn't that complicated to allow people to be themselves, really.”

In a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson dated July 29, Grayson stated, "I write to request the imposition of a travel ban on the citizens of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, and any foreign person who has visited one of these nations 90 days prior to arriving in the United States."

Fraudulent Medicaid Billing
Drug manufacturer also illegally promoted
antidepressants, offered kickbacks
Baltimore, MD - Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler announced today that Maryland, along with other states and the federal government, has secured a $31 million national settlement with Organon USA, Inc., resolving allegations that the drug manufacturer underpaid rebates to Maryland's Medical Assistance Program, offered improper financial incentives to nursing home pharmacy companies, promoted its antidepressants for unapproved uses and misrepresented its drug prices to Maryland's Medical Assistance Program. Maryland's share of the settlement is $392,097.78, a portion of which will be shared with the federal government, which provides funding for the Maryland Medicaid Program.
"This money belongs to the citizens of Maryland and can be used to provide health care to those in need," said Attorney General Gansler. "This drug manufacturer put profit above customer care when it offered kickbacks to nursing home pharmacy companies that plugged the unapproved use of its products."

Ron Klain and Solyndra
The administration’s point man on a solar fraud is now in charge of Ebola.
Ron Klain is a sharp-elbowed Democratic political operative with no medical expertise. Tapping him as “Ebola czar” may not be the president’s best move when, as it is, no one can believe a word the Obama administration says. And that’s not just because Mr.Klain is yet another lobbyist recruited despite Mr. Obama’s vow that his administration would shun lobbyists.
Klain was also a central player in the president’s Solyndra fraud, which soaked taxpayers for over half a billion dollars for the benefit of Obama cronies.
In Faithless Execution, I recount the Solyndra fraud. It never got the attention it deserved — involving, as it did, potential felony fraud violations of federal law. Even for people who did give it attention at the time, Solyndra is so many Obama scandals ago that its unseemly details are tough to recall. The story is thus worth retelling. As our nerves fray over the Ebola crisis, it is a valuable window into the administration’s priorities and an indicator of the level of trust we can put in the new czar’s assurances.
Solyndra was a solar-energy company backed by the family foundation of George Kaiser, an Oklahoma oil magnate and major Obama fundraiser. Prior to Obama’s coming to power, Solyndra had sought government funding under the economically absurd 2005 Energy Policy Act. That law lets the government play venture capitalist, investing taxpayer money in private “green energy” boondoggles that cannot attract adequate market financing.

Ebola: Americans agree with Republicans this time
Much of the nation is in agreement with the GOP’s call for temporary travel restrictions and stricter entry regulations when it comes to West African nations now burdened with Ebola and its management. Why, it seems like just yesterday that Republicans were getting blamed for Ebola by members of the Obama administration, select Democrats and noisy progressives who broadly cited “budget cuts” as their rationale. Time and the public narrative quickly marched on, however. Pollsters have gauged citizen sentiment on the situation, and their findings suggest that big majorities favor GOP prudence about Ebola — voiced by, among many others, House Speaker John A. Boehner, Rep. Trey Gowdy and Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Here’s a sampling of what’s out there:
Ninety-one percent of Americans favor stricter screening for people traveling to the U.S. from West Africa; 66 percent support a flight ban (Washington Post/ABC News Poll released Oct. 14); 89 percent favor stricter screening of travelers inbound from affected areas (Harris/Health Day poll released Oct. 10); 79 percent would avoid international travel if an Ebola outbreak occurred in the U.S. (Reuters/Ipsos poll released Oct. 16); 72 percent favor a quarantine of travelers from affected areas; 56 do not approve their entry into the U.S. (The Economist YouGov poll released Oct. 15).

Did illegals bring aggressive, virus-transmitting mosquito?
Deadly insect found in L.A. endemic to Central America
Did illegal aliens from Central America bring with them an aggressive mosquito just discovered in California that is a known transmitter of debilitating and possibly deadly viruses?
Both the mosquito itself and many of the viruses that can be transmitted by the insect are endemic to Central America and have been found in Mexico.
The yellow fever mosquitoes were found Oct. 7 and 8 in the Los Angeles counties of Commerce and Pico Rivera, as the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.
The mosquito, also known by its scientific name, Aedes aegypti, is an insect capable of spreading dengue fever, chikungunya, yellow fever viruses and other diseases.
Susanne Kluh, director of scientific-technical services for the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District, told the Times that while the “debilitating viruses, so far, aren’t locally transmitted in L.A. County, the mosquitoes that can transmit them are now here.”
“Infected travelers can bring these viruses to Los Angeles County,” Kluh warned.

Obama Administration Quietly Prepares 'Surge' Of Millions Of New Immigrant IDs
Despite no official action from the president ahead of the election, the Obama administration has quietly begun preparing to issue millions of work authorization permits, suggesting the implementation of a large-scale executive amnesty may have already begun.
Unnoticed until now, a draft solicitation for bids issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Oct. 6 says potential vendors must be capable of handling a “surge” scenario of 9 million id cards in one year “to support possible future immigration reform initiative requirements.”
The request for proposals says the agency will need a minimum of four million cards per year. In the “surge,” scenario in 2016, the agency would need an additional five million cards – more than double the baseline annual amount for a total of 9 million.

NRA-PVF Endorses Larry Hogan for Governor in General Election on November 4
The 2014 Statewide Election is November 4 and your National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) wants to make sure you know who supports your Second Amendment rights before you go to the voting booth. For the 2014 Statewide Election, NRA-PVF has endorsed Larry Hogan for Governor in Maryland.
NRA-PVF strongly urges you to support and vote to elect Larry Hogan for Governor in the great state of Maryland in the 2014 Statewide Election on November 4. We hope that you will get out and vote and encourage all of your family, friends, and fellow Second Amendment supporters to do the same.
The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) is proud to endorse Larry Hogan for Governor of Maryland.
This endorsement is based on Hogan’s support for and commitment to the Second Amendment. Larry Hogan respects the rule of law and the Second Amendment rights of Maryland’s law-abiding citizens. In sharp contrast, his opponent, Lt. Governor Anthony Brown, is a true enemy of gun owners' rights. Brown has earned an “F” rating for his consistent anti-gun record. Brown and his running mate Ken Ulman have aggressively attacked the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Marylanders and continue to voice their support for the failed and flawed “Firearms Safety Act of 2013,” the most sweeping and offensive gun ban in Maryland history, which does nothing to address violent crime.

Wisconsin Teachers Choosing to Pull Out of Unions
Increasing numbers of teachers in Wisconsin are choosing not to remain union members now that they have a choice, Fox News reported. A 2011 law — unsuccessfully opposed by unions in the state Legislature, through a gubernatorial recall election, and in the courts — has resulted in a precipitous decline in enrollment.
Until the law was passed, teachers were compelled to be members of either the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC) or the smaller AFT-Wisconsin. The educational system was obligated to withdraw union dues directly from teachers' pay and pass the fees on.
Under the current law, unions need to seek annual recertification from teachers to establish that a majority still want it to represent them in collective bargaining, Fox News reported.
Since the law's passage, WEAC membership has fallen by about 33 percent from some 100,000 teachers. The AFT-Wisconsin union has seen its membership fall by more than 50 percent from 16,000 in its heyday.

New Video Provides More Information In OC Manslaughter Case
OCEAN CITY — New details emerged this week in the manslaughter case against two local men charged for their alleged roles in the death of a Pennsylvania man found unresponsive and unconscious in a downtown hotel parking lot in August.
A new surveillance video was released this week that chronicles the events from when the victim and two other individuals arrived at the hotel in a taxi to the time he was taken by ambulance to AGH.
Around 3 a.m. on Aug. 24, Ocean City Police and Emergency Services responded to a hotel parking lot on 2nd Street for a reported assault that had already occurred. Upon arrival, OCPD officers found the victim, later identified as Justin D. Cancelliere, 37, of North Whitehall, Pa., unconscious and unresponsive. First responders from the OCPD and Ocean City Fire Department initiated emergency lifesaving procedures on the victim and transported him to AGH where he was later pronounced deceased. An autopsy was performed and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled to nature of Cancelliere’s injuries as head and neck trauma and the cause of death a homicide.

Hogan reacts to state’s decision to delay court action on failed Anthony Brown health exchange
Calls on state officials to “put taxpayers before politics”
ANNAPOLIS, MD – Larry Hogan today scolded state officials for seeking to delay court action to recoup $55 million from the primary contractor for Maryland’s failed health exchange website.
Last April, officials from Maryland’s Anthony Brown-led health exchange fired the contractor, Noridian Healthcare Solutions, and vowed to seek court actions to recoup the money spent on the dysfunctional website. However, this past weekend, Maryland officials reportedly agreed to delay court action until after the Nov. 4 election.
The decision comes a little over two weeks before Election Day for Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, who was in charge of the health exchange.
“With Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown’s poll numbers collapsing, it is no surprise that state officials would pull such a stunt,” said Larry Hogan. “We have an election on Nov. 4, but they will do anything to keep Anthony Brown’s failed leadership of the health exchange, which cost taxpayers $288 million, out of the headlines in the days leading up to the election. For once, state officials should put the taxpayer ahead of party politics.”
Hogan added, “The state should move forward with its promise to get back $55 million of wasted taxpayer dollars from the company that helped drive the health exchange into the ground. Lt. Gov. Brown, who led the rollout of the exchange, should demand that the state keep its court date with Noridian.”

A 36-year-old man has been treated in hospital for gastroenteritis - or 'stomach flu' - after apparently finding a rat's head in his bowl of chili at a Golden Corral restaurant.
Billy Wilson, a roofer, had reportedly just taken the first bite of his meal at the restaurant in Cape Corral, Florida, when he discovered the rodent.
He immediately spat it out of his mouth, before running to the bathroom and vomiting. After inspecting the object more closely, he found it had curly ears, gray fur and a protruding tooth.

GAZIANTEP, Turkey — While U.S. warplanes strike at the militants of the so-called Islamic State in both Syria and Iraq, truckloads of U.S. and Western aid has been flowing into territory controlled by the jihadists, assisting them to build their terror-inspiring “caliphate.”
The aid—mainly food and medical equipment—is meant for Syrians displaced from their hometowns, and for hungry civilians. It is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, European donors, and the United Nations. Whether it continues is now the subject of anguished debate among officials in Washington and European. The fear is that stopping aid would hurt innocent civilians and would be used for propaganda purposes by the militants, who would likely blame the West for added hardship.
The Bible says if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him something to drink—doing so will “heap burning coals” of shame on his head. But there is no evidence that the militants of the Islamic State, widely known as ISIS or ISIL, feel any sense of disgrace or indignity (and certainly not gratitude) receiving charity from their foes.
Quite the reverse, the aid convoys have to pay off ISIS emirs (leaders) for the convoys to enter the eastern Syrian extremist strongholds of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor, providing yet another income stream for ISIS militants, who are funding themselves from oil smuggling, extortion, and the sale of whatever they can loot, including rare antiquities from museums and archaeological sites.

Baltimore Volunteers Line Up In The Race To Find An Ebola Vaccine
The race to find an Ebola vaccine is now lining up volunteers here in Baltimore.
Alex DeMetrick has more on what doctors and volunteers face during a vaccine trial.
The University of Maryland is now testing the Ebola vaccine, developed at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda.
The vaccine takes only one protein from the virus, which is not enough to give a person Ebola, but “this one protein that can lead to immune responses that allow protection,” said Dr. Myron Levine, University of Maryland Center for Vaccine Development.

Proposal Would Ban Sales Of Puppies And Kittens In Pet Stores
Everyone has seen images of puppy mills, where dogs are crammed into cages awaiting sale to anyone with the cash or credit card to buy them.
No one wants to buy from puppy mills, but the possibility that they're sending dogs to pet stores has inspired a Montgomery County Council member draft a proposal that could ban the sale of puppies -- and kittens -- in pet stores.
"I know it will be controversial," says Montgomery County Council member George Leventhal.
He also knows it would leave open a difficult question: Where are you supposed to buy a puppy if not from a pet store?

Unable to Meet the Deductible or the Doctor
Patricia Wanderlich got insurance through the Affordable Care Act this year, and with good reason: She suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2011, spending weeks in a hospital intensive care unit, and has a second, smaller aneurysm that needs monitoring.
But her new plan has a $6,000 annual deductible, meaning that Ms. Wanderlich, who works part time at a landscaping company outside Chicago, has to pay for most of her medical services up to that amount. She is skipping this year’s brain scan and hoping for the best.
“To spend thousands of dollars just making sure it hasn’t grown?” said Ms. Wanderlich, 61. “I don’t have that money.”
About 7.3 million Americans are enrolled in private coverage through the Affordable Care Act marketplaces, and more than 80 percent qualified for federal subsidies to help with the cost of their monthly premiums. But many are still on the hook for deductibles that can top $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for families — the trade-off, insurers say, for keeping premiums for the marketplace plans relatively low. The result is that some people — no firm data exists on how many — say they hesitate to use their new insurance because of the high out-of-pocket costs.

JUST IN: Oscar Pistorius Sentenced To Five Years In Prison For Girlfriend's Killing
A South African judge sentenced former Olympic and Paralymic sprinter Oscar Pistorius to a maximum of five years in prison Tuesday for the culpable homicide of his girlfriend last February.
Judge Thokozile Masipa also gave the athlete once known as "The Blade Runner" a three-year suspended sentence on a firearms charge. She had found Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide, or negligent killing, but had acquitted him of the more serious crime of murder.
Masipa based the sentence on what she called the "gross negligence" of Pistorius, who shot Steenkamp multiple times through a toilet cubicle door in his home early on the morning of Feb. 14, 2013. Pistorius had testified that the shooting was an accident because he mistook his girlfriend for a nighttime intruder.

Wendy Davis doubles down on controversial empty wheelchair ad that attacks her paralyzed foe in governor's race
Texas gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis refused to apologize on Monday for a controversial ad her campaign released last week that targets her wheelchair-bound, Republican opponent Greg Abbott.
The Davis ad uses an empty wheelchair to criticize Abbott, the Lone Star state's partially paralyzed attorney general, for his handling of other victims' legal claims as a government official.
The spot has been widely cast as the most negative political ad of the election cycle, and Davis has been skewered by conservatives for preying on Abbott's disability.
David stood by the ad today at a news conference, telling reporters 'this ad is about one thing and one thing only: It is about Greg Abbott's hypocrisy.'

Water temperature of the Great Lakes is over 6 degrees colder than normal
Michigan residents may see a cold and icy winter arrive sooner this year, reportedly due to lower temperatures in the Great Lakes.
Average surface temperatures for both Lake Superior and Lake Michigan have dropped: Superior's went from from 53.7 degrees on October 11, 2013 to 47.6 degrees Saturday, while Michigan's went from 62.1 degrees to 56.0 degrees, MLive.com reported.
That means both lakes experienced temperature drops of 6.1 degrees, the news site explained.

An Obscure Mark Twain Quote Can Teach You How To Self-Regulate
How many times has this happened to you:
You arrive at work, knowing that you have a big important project/report/phone call/etc. to take care of. You're not looking forward to it, for whatever reason, so you decide to just check your email first. And then, after reading and responding to emails, you decide you'd better clean out and organize your inbox. And while doing that, you find a bunch of interesting links to look at online…
And before you know it, it's time for lunch, and you haven't even looked at that important thing you needed to do.
It's human nature that we often ignore or don't deal with the things we don't like, or that are difficult. This applies to everything from having a difficult conversation with a coworker to filing our taxes or getting a check-up at the dentist.
We procrastinate or find other more exciting things to do. In fact, we're really good at avoiding those things we don't want to do. But the secret is that the people who just buckle down and get them done, end up being more successful in the long run.

Jesus in a coffee shop
A Republican in a wheelchair entered a restaurant one afternoon and asked the waitress for a cup of coffee. The Republican looked across the restaurant and asked, "Is that Jesus sitting over there?"
The waitress nodded "yes," so the Republican requested that she give Jesus a cup of coffee, on him.
The next patron to come in was a Libertarian, with a hunched back . He shuffled over to a booth, painfully sat down, and asked the waitress for a cup of hot tea. He also glanced across the restaurant and asked, "Is that Jesus overthere?" The waitress nodded, so the Libertarian asked her to give Jesus a cup of hot tea, "My treat."
The third patron to come into the restaurant was a Democrat on crutches. Hehobbled over to a booth, sat down, and hollered, "Hey there honey! How'sabout getting me a cold mug of Miller Light?" He too looked across therestaurant and asked, "Isn’t that God's boy over there?"
The waitress nodded, so the Democrat directed her to give Jesus a cold beer. "On my bill," he said loudly.
As Jesus got up to leave, he passed by the Republican, touched him, and said, "For your kindness, you are healed." The Republican felt the strength come back into his legs, got up, and began to praise the Lord.

Federal Debt Now $200,000 Per Full-Time Private-Sector Worker
Which will be greater: the burden of student debt on Americans who went off this fall to their first year of college, or the amount of federal debt per full-time private-sector worker when these students earn their degrees and start looking for jobs?
There is no doubt: It will be the amount of federal debt per full-time private-sector worker.
As of last Friday, the total debt of the federal government was $17,858,480,029,490.28, according to the U.S. Treasury. That equaled $200,258.81 for each of the 89,177,000 full-time private-sector workers that, according to the Census Bureau, were in the United States in 2013.
