Worcester Parents Seek Teacher Raises, Increased Technology Funding

NEWARK – Appeals for raises for teachers and funding for technology topped budget requests made to the Worcester County Board of Education this week.

Representatives of School Improvement Advisory Committees (SIAC) from throughout the county shared their schools’ requests during a public budget input meeting Dec. 2.

Salary increases for teachers and funds for technology were asked for by each school.

“Teachers are demonstrably the most important resource we have,” said Todd Ferrante, the parent representing Ocean City Elementary School’s SIAC.

It was a sentiment echoed by each school’s representatives when it was their turn to speak.

  1. To be fair, what is the current average salary of a teacher in this county? They do work less than 180 days a year, right? Most of them already have a summer job in OC.

    Where did the notion come that teaching was about the money,and not about the children?

    There are plenty of college grads now looking for jobs, and fresh blood is always better than having those who look at their bank accounts rather than just enjoying a career is seeing their students succeed.

  2. We can tell you are not a teacher.
    I am married to one. They work a 8 hour day then go home and grade papers till midnight. Trust me with the education they are required to have they do not make the salary they are worth. They do not do it for the MONEY.
    As for as fresh blood do you honestly think they learn anything in college that is better for our children then years of experience? Walk a mile in thier shoes before you open your mouth.

    I think teachers should be paid minimum wage...per student...

    lets see...at $7.25 an hour times 25 students in a class = $181.25 an hour times a 7 hour day (forget all that after hours stuff - they aren't worth it) = $1268.75 A DAY times 180 days (forget all of that in-service nonsense) = $228,375.00

    ...what?

    You mean we are getting more value at less than minimum wage for teachers?

    ....maybe we out to rethink this...

    and as for fresh blood....well, there is financial value in that...you see these calculations are based on NEW teachers with NO experience...

    Be glad that the very vast majority of teachers are indeed in this for their students...

    ...and not minimum wage...

  4. Teachers knew the pay range, working conditions and work hours before the took the job. Is any teacher in Maryland being forced to keep their job? Sounds like sour grapes to me.
