It was a shocking tale of drunken gang rape at a University of Virginia frat party — and it sparked a national firestorm over rampant sexual violence on campus and indifference to the victims.
But on Friday, Rolling Stone’s sensational story about the assault on the young woman it identified as “Jackie” fell apart, with the magazine’s editor admitting that her explosive charges may not be true.

“Jackie” claimed that she was raped at a September 2012 pledge party and that the ringleader worked at the university’s pool — but the fraternity said those claims could not be true.
