Lewes, DE – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred early this morning on SR24.
Preliminary investigation indicates the incident occurred around 5:50 a.m. Wednesday November 19, 2014 as Jason A. Jewell, 36 of Seaford was operating a 2002 Dodge Ram Van westbound on John J. Williams Highway (SR24) just east of Camp Arrowhead Road. William McCafferty, 75 of Lewes, was walking in a southwesterly direction on SR24 in the traffic lane without a flashlight and reflective or light colored clothing when he was struck by the van. After the impact, Mr. McCafferty was thrown into the roadway and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jewell was able to bring his vehicle to a controlled stop after the collision. He and his 33 year old male passenger from Seaford were not injured in the crash.
John J. Williams Highway (SR24) in the area of Camp Arrowhead Road was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in this incident.
“Troopers remind pedestrians to use caution and safety when walking on or near roadways. If you must cross a roadway utilize appropriate cross walks and make sure to look left, then right, then left again before proceeding. When walking near a roadway always make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials. Pedestrians that are walking at night must carry a flashlight for added safety.”
If you're gonna be dumb, ya gotta be tough!
ReplyDeleteTroopers didn't mention that pedestrians need to walk facing traffic so they can move to safety in case they are not seen. Bicyclists, however, need to go WITH traffic.
Please look up and follow the rules, folks. We really don't like to read these stories in the news. This guy was old enough to know better, unfortunately.
This "guy" was my dad. He walked 7 to 15 miles a day for the past 15 yrs I after moving here. He walked route 1 and route 24 in the Summers. SO, he KNOWS The rules of the road. You apparently did not absorb the details. He was walking SW. Route 24 runs East/west. He was going to cross 24 to go to the Valero like he has done more times than you can possibly fathom, then to catch the bus to the VA hospital for tests. DID you read how he was in the road but the impact threw him into the roadway? Makes sense to you? There is still an investigation going. Remember he has loved ones reading others comments and insensitive words like yours are unnecessary.
