For the first time in its nearly 30-year history, Punkin Chunkin machines are silent this fall. |
In an email this past weekend, John Huber said: “I am resigning this year. Not for the bullies in this organization because they don't scare me or add any value to you; they are shameful. I am resigning because I just don't need it. I held this position for the best of the chunk always.”
Huber's resignation comes a month after the organization postponed the 2014 event for the first time in its nearly 30-year history. Citing logistic and time restraints, the organization pulled the plug on the chunk, scheduled for Dover International Speedway the last week in October.
While the move to Dover from its home in Sussex County was announced in early summer, organizers had been threatening to move out of county for months in part because of a lawsuit involving a volunteer spotter who seriously injured in an ATV crash during the 2011 chunk that still hangs over the association. Because of the lawsuit and concerns over liability and the cost of insurance, the association left its seven-year location at the Wheatley farm near Bridgeville after the 2013 event.

All because of a lawsuit, plain and simple. The court is as much to blame as the drunk who was injured.
ReplyDeleteI always thought this was the dumbest thing I have ever heard of!!! Can't understand why people would spend time on this kind of stuff!!! Move on to worthy news, not this crap!!! Like, WAY TO GO VOTERS!!!
ReplyDeleteNot dumb 10:46. There is science and engineering behind the contraptions built to launch the pumpkins from what I can see. The committee does award scholarships from the proceeds from the event to students entering that field of study.
ReplyDeleteFor some it is just entertainment which in and of itself benefits the local economy don't forget.
Glad to hear that 2:31.What specifically is the field called, redneckology?
ReplyDeleteI can remember back in the day when chunkin first started. It was a bunch of fat rednecks wearing flannel shirts trying to see who can throw their leftover pumpkins the furthest. Now big shots done took over the whole party.
