Minneapolis School District Now Needs 'Permission' to Suspend Any Black, Hispanic Student

The Minneapolis public school system announced a major new district-wide policy for disciplining students: any suspension of a non-white student requires the district superintendent's approval.

The MPS has been stung by reports that students of color are 10 times more likely to receive a suspension than white students. The Minneapolis school system has an enrollment of over 32,000 students. Seventy percent are non-white.

School superintendent Bernadeia Johnson, a black woman, maintains that she wants to "disrupt" the current suspension trends.

Superintendent Johnson says that her new policy is aimed at forcing local school administrators to deeply "probe" the reasons for issuing a suspension before that punishment is handed out.

Johnson claims that suspensions meted out to minority students were all too often based on behavior that would not have led to a suspension for a white student.

  1. Instead of suspending the bad actors, create a class that teaches good behavior and mandate a passing grade. Go To Class Until You Pass.

  2. You folks tend to miss the problem because you do not delve into the issue; you simply read a headline and go off on a tirade. Racial bias has been proven by quite a few studies at this point. We're talking two students, committing the same act, but receiving two different punishments based on race. I for one say hit them both hard regardless of race, but unfortunately the system hasn't worked like this. Unfortunately the same goes for selection of students for remedial courses where minority students showing the same behavior/academic performance as white students, are pushed into the "dumb" class at a higher rate. Again, no one is talking about letting bad apples pass by. The problem is that all the students with problems should be treated similarly.

  3. Hispanics and blacks are the nations school problems.
They should be treated different , that's what they want , that's what they have asked for , special exemptions to all rules.
They are special , however , I'm glad I'm not one of them.
Take a good look at Mexico , trash , take a good look at Africa , the only good thing that has come from Africa are diamonds.

  4. Oh for goodnes sake 1:57--are you freaking kidding? Do you know who is REALLY discriminated against???? Yeah its the patriotic WHITE kid who is a Christian standing up for his beliefs--the kindergardner who is suspended for a pop-tart shaped like a gun, the kid who wears a flag tee shirt, the kid who brings a bible to school . You bleeding heart liberals are what is WRONG.

  5. Actually, 1:57, YOU miss the point. This is simply government-imposed racism. And most of the 'studies' that support this behavior started with conclusions and worked backward.

  6. 1:57 Its already happening here in wic county. I work at a county school (for over 20 years) and I have seen it first hand. Blacks already have to do more to get suspended than whites. They chance after chance. The boy that raped the girl at parkside is a prime example. He was in trouble all the time being moved from school to school. They become emboldened by the lack of effort by the administration and do whatever they want. They will even tell you that. I even heard from another teacher that a administrator from bennett told them they were not suspending someone because they were black. Get your kids out of the public schools if you can, its falling apart fast.
