McDermott Vows Senate Rematch

BERLIN — There was closure late last week in the Maryland Senate District 38 race when Republican challenger Mike McDermott conceded the election to incumbent Democrat Jim Mathias, but the lame duck delegate said he would likely return for another shot in four years.

At the close of the polls last Tuesday, Mathias had earned 19,133 votes, or 51.6 percent, while McDermott had tallied 17,905, or 48.3 percent. However, with a lead of 1,228 votes and roughly 1,300 absentee and provisional ballots still to count, Mathias’ pending re-election was put on hold.

After the first canvas of absentee ballots last Thursday, it became clear McDermott would not be able to close the sizable gap and the incumbent Delegate conceded to Mathias last Friday. McDermott said late last week he was proud of the race he had run and although the outcome didn’t go his way, he was pleased his Republican brethren swept most of the elections across the state.

  1. In light of Mathias's campaign having outspent McDermott by a factor of 10:1 - and - considering that the Governor's redistricting actually carved-up Mike McDermott's home District, in my honest opinion Jim Mathias should relinquish the seat to Mike McDermott ASAP.

I say this because Jim Mathias will not be able to adequately govern without an overwhelming consensus among the voters of his home District. Actually - it is poor reflection on Jim Mathias's re-election campaign.

  2. May God bless you, Mike, as you have blessed us all who you represent! Writing home to us was the biggest thing for me, as I really felt your caring attitude and expressed drive to fight for our agendas was unique, yet obviously missing from every other representative in the Country!

I'm sure there are others that do, but thank you for that.

Hoping you will get an appointment in the Hogan Admin until your next run so you can keep looking out for our best interests here!

Again, thank you for your outstanding service to us.

  4. Mike McDermott got screwed by O'Malley with this redistricting, but it backfired on his buddy the one and only Norm Conway who is a very angry man at this time.

Mike McDermott will come back. The Eastern Shore needs a conservative with Balls.

  5. thank you Mike for sharing and caring so much - we know who is always working for us! and compared to the likes of Liberal Jim, I guess that would make you "ultraconservative" LOL - we used to be considered normal Americans...
