Obama May Send National Guard to Liberia to Fight Ebola

President Barack Obama is expected to issue an executive order Thursday paving the way for the deployment of National Guard forces to Liberia to help contain the Ebola outbreak there, sources told NBC News.

The sources said that eight engineers and logistical specialists from the Guard, both active-duty and reservists, would probably be included in the first deployment. They are expected to help build 17 Ebola treatment centers, with 100 beds apiece. The sources said that no decision had been made.

Defense Department officials said that the executive order was necessary to speed the deployments, and would allow the president to send additional forces as needed. Health officials have recorded more than 2,400 Ebola deaths in Liberia, the highest of any country.

Do you those career politixians mentioned here would take a stand against Obama? They've been followimg his coatails for long time. They don't care about constituents. If they want to send our sons and daughters into Ebola infested countries, let's send every Democ-Rat in there first and make sure they are in the front lines.

  7. Illegal act! The national guard is under the direct order of the state governor. Don't go, it is illegal and dangerous to those people. Let the African die!

  8. I really wish U.S. citizens could send Obama there. Send the supplies there and let them set up their own wellness stations, etc. In and out, just to drop off supplies, period.

  9. The military is for killing people and breaking things.

Our troops will most likely secure the natural resources in the country.

  10. The National Guard was not created to go and fight infectious disease in Africa. They were created to supplement AD in times of conflict and to help protect the homeland. To use them in this capacity, especially when you have an AD force, creates more strain on the citizen soldier. Time and time again, these individuals have to deliver news to their primary employer that they will once again leave to support overseas operations. Continuous deployments leaves the individuals, families, and employers in a bad situation. Ohh, and by the way, where is the World Health Organization in this situation? Not one news report that I have seen shows them taking any kind of leading role in helping to contain this crisis in Africa. The one thing this situation has shown is another government agency has not been able to handle yet another potential crisis. Bottom line, use the Guard to help protect the border and prevent the one nutcase who intentionally contracts the virus to spread during the season of giving, and chooses not to identify his illness.
