Woman Sentenced To 46 Months For Stealing $5.1 Million From D.C Based Nonprofit

A Maryland woman who stole $5.1 million from a District-based nonprofit was sentenced to 46 months in prison Friday after a sobbing apology in court that proved unmoving to a federal judge.

“You strike me, despite your tears here, as a very skilled con artist,” said U.S. District Court Court Judge Beryl A. Howell in Washington before imposing sentence on Ephonia Green, 44, of Upper Marlboro.

Green embezzled the funds while working as a $56,000 a year administrative assistant at the Association of American Medical Colleges. The association represents medical schools and teaching hospitals and administers the test known as the MCAT used in medical school admissions.

  1. Steal 5 million dollars and sit in jail for 5 years....hmmm. I wonder if she will have to pay any of it back. I didn't see that it mentioned that part. Who wouldn't sit in jail if you could get 5 million!

  2. Lets hope she gets rapped in the jail everyday, like she rapped the charity!

  4. The charity and its financial administrators/managers are just as culpable for not doing their due diligence and protecting their assets.
There was someone above her not doing their job, but of course they go unpunished.

  5. 6:55 quite a harsh and rude comment. This is not a true non-profit helping the disabled or needy. In fact I am not sure how this organization even qualifies to be a non profit when it is a corporation that administers testing.
What I find just as appalling are non profits that have CEO's with mansions and private jets. Just another more acceptable / legal way of stealing from a "charity".

  6. 8:10 Don't forget the person in HR. Who would hire someone that has a known record of theft and give them access to all the money!

  7. A local women, here in Salisbury, recently received 15 years in Jessup for stealing 400K from her employer. How can there be such a disparity? 5.1 million? Really?

  9. 46 months for $5.1 million dollars? Works out to be about $640/hr for sitting in jail. Pretty good gig! Where do I sign up?
