Plasma TVs are just about dead

The plasma TV business is fading to black.

Samsung confirmed Thursday that it was shutting down its plasma TV business "due to changes in market demands," choosing instead to focus on curved and ultra-high-definition models that use LED technology. The news was first reported by Reuters.

Samsung's announcement follows news last year that Panasonic had decided to stop making plasma panels. Seoul-based LG, the last major international plasma TV manufacturer, is also planning on shutting down plasma production, according to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency.

Manufacturers are increasingly looking to LED and LCD screens as they develop the next generation of TV sets. Veronica Thayer, a consumer electronics analyst with IHS, said the last shipments of plasma TVs for American retail shelves will come by the end of this year.

  1. Got a great Panasonic plasma just in time at a great price. Curved screens another gimic like 3D. The cheaper to produce LCD TV's with their artificially bright screens, weak blacks and narrow accurate viewing angles easily outsold plasma in store. The more expensive to produce plasma's days have been numbered.

  3. Plasmas use extremely high amounts of electric to operate and give off heat. Burn spots often appear, LED is much more reliable and easier on the utility bill.

I don't want to tell you to return it, but you got a highly outdated TV that will continue to dent your wallet via your Delmarva Power bill.

You probably could have gotten an LED TV at nearly the same price!

  6. 10:38 pay no attention, most of these commentors have no idea what they are talking about. I have had plasma, LCD, and LED sets and nothing comes close to the color quality and black levels of a plasma for the value. As far as "denting the wallet" by power bill, you are talking about approximately $50 PER YEAR at average usage levels for a plasma, versus approximately $20 for an LED or LCD. Really breaking the bank.
