Maryland Gun Control Law Debated In Federal Court

The debate over Maryland’s newest gun law moves to federal court. A US judge in Baltimore heard arguments Tuesday calling the state’s ban on the sale of assault rifles unconstitutional.

Derek Valcourt has more on the effort to have the judge throw out parts of the law.

Gun rights advocates couldn’t stop the General Assembly from passing the Firearms Safety Act. They failed to get enough signatures to overturn it by voter referendum and now they’re asking the courts to stop it.

The Sandy Hook School Massacre propelled Maryland lawmakers to ban the purchase of 45 different types of assault weapons and put a 10 round limit on magazines, all over the vocal objections of gun rights advocates. Those advocates took their legal beef with the law to federal court Tuesday, arguing that limiting access to certain rifles and large capacity magazines infringes on second amendment rights and does not help prevent crime.

  2. I have decided to no longer care. We have surrendered so many of our rights there is no turning the horse around. I am prepared for the impending revolt that is on the horizon. When the poop hits the fan the least of our worries will be what bullshit gun law we are violating.

  4. Maryland lawmakers that voted for the Gov's gun bill are morons for sure. Same ones that voted to let perverts sit next to your wife and daughters in a public restrooms. If they were truly interested in saving lives they would be against late term abortions. Apples to oranges: a handful of kids in a school or thousands every day. You liberal Dems are one big, lying contradiction.

  5. Just one of the many reasons I moved out of Maryland to Virginia. It is so nice to walk into the Walmart here and go to the sporting goods department and see several AR's for sale under a $1000.00. Lots of ammo on the shelves, 22's, 38, 9mm, 357, 44, 45, yup, nice to live in a gun friendly state!
