Maryland congressman Andy Harris: How he came to challenge D.C.’s marijuana law

The Maryland congressman challenging the District’s new marijuana-decriminalization law is no stranger to unpopular stances, having survived a contentious 12 years as a Republican lawmaker in the state’s Democratic-dominated General Assembly.

During last fall’s budget standoff, Rep. Andy Harris was one of the last true believers, continuing to vote against the federal budget even at the risk of prolonging a government shutdown. He equates mandated insurance coverage of contraception with the burning of churches and medical use of marijuana with telling patients to chew on mold instead of taking penicillin.

As a state senator in 2008, Harris tried to withhold funding to the University of Maryland because students planned to screen an X-rated film. He said he considers pornography “poison.”

  1. Andy Harris - son of immigrants, believer in GOD, deliverer of babies - how dangerous can one man get? This country deserves to be wiped off the earth - does anyone remember Ninevah?

If WaPo is whining about someone, that's a thumbs up for me.
The world's on fire and weed smoking in D.C. is worth investigating.

  4. "Harris defeated Kratovil in 2010 and was reelected to Congress in 2012 after his Democratic opponent dropped out amid allegations of voter fraud."

    Allegations?!
Wendy Rosen was registered in two states (MD & FL) and voted in both states in 2006. This is not an allegation, it's a fact.

  5. My political persuasion is slightly to the right of Attila the Hun, but there's nothing wrong with smoking a little pot. Don't drive on it, don't give it to kids, and don't make money on it. Any other drug? Do not pass Go, do not collect $200, go directly to jail.

Deliverer of babies? The man is an anesthesiologist! He put people to sleep for a living! And he went against the results of a fairly-contested referendum. The PEOPLE of DC voted what they wanted, but this man who doesn't even represent them chose a different outcome for them. What's wrong with democracy, Rep. Andy Harris? Not good enough for you?

  8. How does this support less government? Isn't this federal government over reach?
