Wicomico's Residents Being Squeezed - County Council Votes to Raise Property Taxes AGAIN!

Last night - the Wicomico County Council voted to increase Wicomico's residents real property taxes yet again.  By a vote of 5-2 - the County Council voted to raise the real property tax rate, and, approved the 2014-2015 Fiscal Operating Budget.  The two dissenters that voted against the proposed operating budget were County Councilman - Joe Holloway, and County Councilman Bob Culver.

Despite Wicomico's Per Capita Net Taxable Income decline - the majority of  your elected officials voted to approve the Pollitt Administration's latest fiscal budget - (see chart below)As one can clearly see - Wicomico's residents are bearing the brunt of a run-a-way political system.  From when the recession began - Wicomico's per capita net taxable income (disposable income) is down by almost $2000.  Logical income/spending reasoning would have been for the County's proposed operating budget to have declined - instead - it increased onto the backs of Wicomico's citizens

Population - Per Capita Net Taxable Income

FY 2000 - $11,940
FY 2001 - $11,779
FY 2002 - $11,666
FY 2003 - $12,245
FY 2004 - $13,906
FY 2005 - $14, 637
FY 2006 - $14,994
FY 2007 - $15,417
FY 2008 - $13,695
FY 2009 - $12,898
FY 2010 - $13,134
FY 2011 - $13,028
FY 2012 - $13,520

Our Editorial staff sincerely hopes that the citizens of Wicomico County will be spurred into action as a result of a run-a-way political system.  From our perspective - your Local Government spending is Out of Control.

  1. Looks like the rest of the county council turned Democrat!

Elections are coming - as before, we'll get what we vote for.

    VOTE!

  2. I believe I heard one of the reasons this increase is "necessary" because the democrats in Annapolis needed to steal from the highway/road repair fund to balance the state's budget and in order to keep roads in good condition locally this "needed" to happen.
Every single democrat needs to go. They are worthless. Their worthlessness can not be emphasized enough. Everything they have ever touch has turned into a pile of crap. This goes for everything. Never has any of their policies worked nor will they ever work. Intelligent people can see this. Their only claim to fame is creating uncertainty for the children. You can not rob Peter to pay Paul for too long. The money dries up.

  3. Interesting that Pollitt's public info person had a message out within minutes of the vote touting the new budget and tax increase.

  4. Thank you Wicomico, just a matter of time before my wife and I move to a friendlier state.

  5. Thanks Wicomico County for screwing us just one more time. Where in the hell do you think money is going to come from to pay these taxes? Incomes do not go up in this neck of the woods but you can sure God keep raising taxes all the time and expect people not to be upset. Pretty soon there will be no Wicomico County, people just cannot keep on paying for you to party each day away using our hard earned money. Election time cannot get here soon enough.

  7. Even though we voted for some Republican representation on the council - they turned on their own citizens.

We need the ability to recall those that we elected that no longer represent us in the manner that got them elected...and re-elected.

Stevie - you would be gone! this is not the first time you have voted with the Democrats and screwed your constituents! What did they give you for your vote?

  8. I notice many large Matt Holloway signs throughout the county. Time to vote out the liberals

  9. Interesting that this site fails to mention the tax rate is going to be virtually the same as 2007. You can only cut taxes and services so much before it catches up to you. Face it, Wicomico County taxes are still some of the lowest in the entire state.

  10. Wicomico is no place to aquire a pipe dream. So many roll the dice and so few succeed. The big Fitzwater St project hasn't been in the news lately.I wonder how that's coming along. Not much news since the old/new building was torn down, and artists of all types must be chomping at the bit to get in.I know that's a city issue, but it's in the county.

  11. Is Pollitt still refusing to give the council a line item budget? If so what would happen if one of us filed a FOIA to go in and examine it? I don't think they could refuse.

    2007 Taxes?
2007 was before the great recession hit. Most of us are now earning wages in the early 1990's range. Incomes have gone down and the cost of living has gone way up. Taxes need to be adjusted to be more in line with wages. Right now they are not. And I question about our taxes being "reasonable".

  15. We cannot continue to keep doing this! Where does it stop, When does it stop, or will it ever stop?? I know my wife and I don't break the bank, but we do work hard for what we have! This must stop, and must stop soon! Many people are already tapped. And this was one of many reasons that the American Revolution took place, as well as the Civil War.

Im so sad for this county, and for the state of Maryland.

I totally agree. We can continue having to pay these increases when wages are being cut in half and jobs are becoming scarce. Something has to give. This is Tyranny!

  17. Spoke with a single lady today and she is raising 2 grandchildren. She is making $8.35 per hour. She doesn't have a clue her taxes were increased last night. Her main concern today was to make sure her property gets sprayed for mosquitos to protect her grandchildren and was unsure she could pay the cost for that. And yes she owns a very small lot with a mobile home on it so she pays property taxes. She is not alone in her struggles. In fact, the demographics of this county is such that she is likely more the norm than the wealthy. My heart hurts for her. But obviously the Republican majority council with the exception of J Holoway and Bob Culver don't give a hoot. This is tragic.

  20. When you let you let liberal Democratic jackass idiots vote you end up with people like Obama O'Malley Fake Day Jim Liarton Rick Pollitt. Liberals are to blind to see that Democrats don't give a damn how they spend your tax dollars and raise your taxes.liberals complain about tax hikes but yet they still vote the idiots back in office. As long as Democrats offer them free stuff like cell phones and food stamps that out ways all the tax hikes they poses on people. Democrats are a bunch of sheep with no common sense. This is why Maryland and America is in the shape it is in noe

  25. The property owners and citizens of Wicomico County are being raped as we speak. Tricky Ricky and his band of thieves are at work spending, spending and more spending. I understand that the remark has been made on the third floor of the Government Office Building (County Council & Administrative Offices) that "they are making taxpayers as we speak and spend." The time has come for a complete house cleaning of the idiots that are currently in office. Although I am not a current fan of Culver & J. Holloway, at the very least they are looking out for the taxpayers.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 11:33... When you are priced out of your area, what choice do you have?

    ReplyDelete
  27. let's face it....a lot of people are not fans of Culver or J. Holloway either for their personalities or issues in their personal lives. However, they are the ONLY ones who seem to care about the out of control expenses in this county. In my opinion, how much worse could Culver be that the entitled arrogance that currently runs the county. I'd rather take my chances with Culver than continue with the out-of-touch bunch that waste our money. I SAY LET'S ALL GIVE CULVER A CHANCE! And Joe Holloway back as Council Prez.

  28. I agree 12:30. This election will be one of voting against instead of voting for. Ricky, pack your bags.

  30. To 8:26 Posting that says the new real property tax rate is about the same as 2007 tax rate.

RESPONSE: What Kool-Aid have you been drinking. You had better go check your tax rate and you'll see that the real property tax rate has increased each and every year.

What is even more alarming is look at what the County Budget was right up until the recession began(2008). It was approximately 131,000,000 almost exactly what it is today. But look at what has happened to our income tax base - IT IS DIMINISHING! Don't you understand the crux of this Article! The Article clearly articulates that the disposable income of all Wicomico County citizens has diminished on the whole. This cannot continue. It is unsustainable and our County officials ought to have not let this happen. I agree with 9:00 AM Posting - taxes need to be adjusted to be more in line with our residents wages.

    ReplyDelete
  31. This is the most bizarre behavior I have ever witnessed - Republicans turn coating on their own citizen base. They have forgotten where they came from.

    ReplyDelete
  32. To 12:51 POSTER

I totally agree with your analogy. One would think that they would have reduced the budgetary numbers to reflect what is happening in our local economy. Even nationally the GDP decreased by about 1% in the first quarter and I would not be a bit surprised if the second quarter numbers were to go negative also. This tax and spend attitude has got to change as they are now robbing the kitty and trying to cover-up their covert spending activity. It is a recipe for a disaster.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think 8:26 poster might be one of the CC members that voted for the tax increase and budget. It sounds as though it might be John Hall.

  34. These are some common bstds. I swear, for every step forward I take it seems as though I am slipping two steps backward. I to have had enough. I'm not voting for any of the Repubs except maybe Holloway and Culver. The rest I hope rot in hell.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I hope that Culver wins the County Executive race. And I would not be one bit surprised if he doesn't pull it off. Pollitt has to know that his politics isn't resonating with the public. Most of our citizens simply want to be left alone. He'll not find very many friends by simply raising the taxing equation.

    ReplyDelete
  36. C'ya Stevie, don't let the door hit you on the way out!

  37. To 1:07, most of the Republicans on the ballot for county council aren't incumbents, except Matt Holloway and Joe Holloway. You'll see a lot of new blood on the council next year. The Republicans running for these empty seats are pretty conservative, so make sure to vote for them.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Matt Holloway has become an embarrassment to the conservative party. Stevie to, and, John Hall fooled a lot of the central committee members when he was being vetted for the post. All of the above have lost their sense of purpose. And Pollitt is also tainted, but how he could have hoodwinked the rest is beyond me.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I saw the entire show on PAC14 last night and I was really impressed by Mr. Millers comments. He seems to be the one of few advocates for the working class citizens and I would hope that he might consider running for a political office. I agree, any residual amounts should be refunded back to the taxpayers just like happened last year in Sussex Co. Delaware.

    ReplyDelete
  40. 2:21 Unfortunately, Wicomicos political system is mired in special interest groups. In a perfect world the taxpayers would be paramount but in Wicomico special interest has bought in to the Pollitt Administration and the taxpayers are having to take a backseat. As for the CC members, they are just falling in line because they do not know any better with the exception of just a few(J. Holloway, B.Culver).

    ReplyDelete
  41. All of the above -- get out and work for Bob Culver, and put your money where your mouth is!

    ReplyDelete
  42. You won't see any of this information on any other media. Thank you Salisbury News for covering this event. I just hope the rest of the County will wake-up and get out and vote the culprits out.

    ReplyDelete
  43. 129 million dollar budget is right there where our budget was in 2007. But unfortunately, our citizens have fallen backwards and have not regained any of the stature that once existed. In fact, our County has gone ass backwards as the income tax revenues are substantially less. Any sane person should realize that this is unsustainable.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Tell the Board of Ed. to stop feeding families for free just to get them to attend something at school. It never stops. It's not like folks learn the value of school activities and come the next year without food being provided. If food stamps plus free lunch and free breakfast aren't enough, they'll just have to miss out on evening school stuff. We can't afford to bribe them any more.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hall is no more of a Republican than Obama is and I cannot figure out what happened to Stevie; Also, Matt Holloway is VERY liberal - should be registered Democrat. Just my opinion....

    ReplyDelete
  46. To 6:57 Poster that said 129 million is where our budget was at before the recession.

Your are absolutely on-point. What the citizens are not being told - is that their incomes have diminished by almost $2000.00. By my math, the current budget is bloated and should have been substantially trimmed. All the County Council did was kick the can down the road again, onto the backs of Wicomico's taxpayers. Tell that to the 850 tax sale victims that are currently being advertised in The Daily Times.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I will vote for only Bob and Joe, the rest is got to go. I had enough of rest.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I am not going to vote for Rick Pollitt and personally I believe he is taking our citizens for a ride. And I will not buy into the argument that there really is nothing that could be done about the budget. What Rick Pollitt should have done is to have sat down with the BOE and played hardball. The only ones that have benefited during the past 6 years has been the BOE employees. It's high time for Wicomico taxpayers to take their government back. Starting right now this should be a bugle call to get rid of those spend thrift politicos who contributed to this morass.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The only two decent CC people are Bob Culver and Joe Holloway. The other 5 can go to xxelll. They simply don't care about the plight of the average Joe Blow.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I don't know how much more I can take of this never ending increase in governmental spending. What seems like a logical reason for a tax reduction, instead, what do we get is yet another round of tax increases. I'm seriously considering to move out of here. Nothing but higher and higher taxes.
