What Obama wants, he appears to get . As AP reports, the U.S. Patent Office has ruled the Washington Redskins nickname is "disparaging of Native Americans" and that the team's federal trademarks for the name must be canceled. Which leaves us questioning when the Federal Government will see the New York Giants as disaparaging of tall people and The Oakland Raiders as disaparaging of pirates... welcome to the new normal. We wonder (rhetorically of course) if this latest Redskins escalation is supposed to distract from Ukraine, Iraq, Bergdahl, IRS, Benghazi, or approval ratings?
As WaPo notes,
Federal trademark law does not permit registration of trademarks that “may disparage” individuals or groups or “bring them into contempt or disrepute.” The ruling pertains to six different trademarks associated with the team, each containing the word “Redskin.”

The right thing to do.
ReplyDeleteThe Federal Government is NUTZ
ReplyDeleteRome is burning and this is what the feds are worrying about?
ReplyDeleteThe native Americans have spoken and have no problem with it. If they don't care then why do we? How many millions of dollars were spent increasing our multi-trillion dollar deficit to do this? USA government needs a true miracle.
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to freedom of speech? Supreme court may have to reverse another Obama blunder.
ReplyDeleteWhat's next get rid of the Giants bc of big people?
ReplyDeleteGet rid of the broncos bc of a animal rights fool
Get rid of the dolphins bc once again animal rights
Get rid of ravens bc once again animal rights
Get rid of cowboy bc some indians don't like the name
Get rid of the eagles bc animal rights fools.
Greenbay packers bc the Mayor of slumsberry takes offence...)
ON AND ON AND ON ...GROW UP.
It is truly time to impeach this POS in our WH. Contact Andy Harris, again if you already have, and push for impeachment.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sick of hearing about this. It's only a ploy to distract from all of the other huge issues that are going on in DC. I hope Daniel Snyder fights this so we can finally put an end to it.
ReplyDeleteObama should be forced to give up the name president, because I find it to be offensive.
ReplyDeleteOur gov't is one big SEWER HOLE!! If there is something wrong with the name, the patent shouldn't have been issued in the first place.
ReplyDeleteThis is no big deal. The Redskins will still remain the same with the same logo. The issue will be that others can use it as well. So anyone who offers a product with that name or logo we just BOYCOTT!
ReplyDeleteWhat Obama wants, Obama gets and there is no body in Congress willing to stop him. WE THE PEOPLE need to step up and not just complain.
ReplyDeleteThe problem and only problem is the American people...
ReplyDeleteFirst and foremost you all let this crap happen, you either help promote this crap or you are complicit and that means you go along to get along and for that you are no better than the ones planning and implementing this obscure crap...
Secondly and most importantly, it is the fault of the american populace because you eat this crap up... You rather hear and read news on robin thicke or miley cyrus (who gives a damn about the spelling)than actual real news... you all find that ruining people's lives is more important and entertaining that real factual news PERIOD!!!
BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE - Ghandi
the government sent the irs after its enemies. now reid is doing the same with the patent office.
ReplyDeleteLong overdue. Change the name NOW!
ReplyDeleteYour hard earned tax dollars at work.
ReplyDeleteWhat a joke!
how about a red skin potatoe. same name and u could always go board walk fries if they dont win..
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteI'm now taking the 'Skins as my second favorite team solely on principle.
Earlier poster noted correctly that it doesn't strip the name but allows anyone else to sell merchandise without paying a royalty.
Would behoove the greedy guts running the NFL to join the appeal since arguably many other sports franchises in pro sports could face the same ridiculous claim.
As a sidebar, rap lyrics denigrating my race are offensive to me. Think Sony, Warner, etc. should lose their trademarks for shepherding and marketing those slurs.
As this works through and nears conclusion however many years down the road, if I were Mr. Snyder it would be a cold day in Landover before any Senator, Representative or other public payroll person advocating against the team's name entered the stadium! Since they're so offended I'm sure they won't mind!
PC run amok; Grrr!
Decades it's been that....now this?? Not being distracted with this one!
ReplyDeleteHahaha!!
ReplyDeleteSterling would fight it like a Pit Bull.
ReplyDeleteAfter what pale face has done to the American Indian? ( 1)Claimed to have discovered America when the Indian was a native (2)Pale face came to kill stieal an destroy ......almost succeeded (3) I can go on but I won't. Give the native only true American some respect. The problem today is pale face thinks he owns the damn country.
ReplyDeleteSame thing happened in '99, reversed in '03... This will be reversed, too... they just want that money flowing, while wasting tax dollars on such crap.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been keeping up with this.Is the intention to get this done before the regular season starts?
ReplyDeleteIt is really sad that this is the most commented article on this blog today. The fact that the name of football team occupies is a concern to the people on the shore speaks volumes for why the area is in such a sorry state.
ReplyDeletePale face does own America

That is true 4:56.... There are white devils as well as black devils.

ReplyDeleteJust change the name to Red Skins.
ReplyDeleteAre they going to change the name of Apache county in Arizona now?
