US Patent Office Strips "Washington Redskins" Name For Being "Disparaging"
What Obama wants, he appears to get . As AP reports, the U.S. Patent Office has ruled the Washington Redskins nickname is "disparaging of Native Americans" and that the team's federal trademarks for the name must be canceled. Which leaves us questioning when the Federal Government will see the New York Giants as disaparaging of tall people and The Oakland Raiders as disaparaging of pirates... welcome to the new normal. We wonder (rhetorically of course) if this latest Redskins escalation is supposed to distract from Ukraine, Iraq, Bergdahl, IRS, Benghazi, or approval ratings?
Federal trademark law does not permit registration of trademarks that “may disparage” individuals or groups or “bring them into contempt or disrepute.” The ruling pertains to six different trademarks associated with the team, each containing the word “Redskin.”
The native Americans have spoken and have no problem with it. If they don't care then why do we? How many millions of dollars were spent increasing our multi-trillion dollar deficit to do this? USA government needs a true miracle.

I'm so sick of hearing about this. It's only a ploy to distract from all of the other huge issues that are going on in DC. I hope Daniel Snyder fights this so we can finally put an end to it.
This is no big deal. The Redskins will still remain the same with the same logo. The issue will be that others can use it as well. So anyone who offers a product with that name or logo we just BOYCOTT!
The problem and only problem is the American people...
First and foremost you all let this crap happen, you either help promote this crap or you are complicit and that means you go along to get along and for that you are no better than the ones planning and implementing this obscure crap...
Secondly and most importantly, it is the fault of the american populace because you eat this crap up... You rather hear and read news on robin thicke or miley cyrus (who gives a damn about the spelling)than actual real news... you all find that ruining people's lives is more important and entertaining that real factual news PERIOD!!!
I'm now taking the 'Skins as my second favorite team solely on principle.
Earlier poster noted correctly that it doesn't strip the name but allows anyone else to sell merchandise without paying a royalty.
Would behoove the greedy guts running the NFL to join the appeal since arguably many other sports franchises in pro sports could face the same ridiculous claim.
As a sidebar, rap lyrics denigrating my race are offensive to me. Think Sony, Warner, etc. should lose their trademarks for shepherding and marketing those slurs.
As this works through and nears conclusion however many years down the road, if I were Mr. Snyder it would be a cold day in Landover before any Senator, Representative or other public payroll person advocating against the team's name entered the stadium! Since they're so offended I'm sure they won't mind!

Give the native only true American some respect. The problem today is pale face thinks he owns the damn country.
Same thing happened in '99, reversed in '03... This will be reversed, too... they just want that money flowing, while wasting tax dollars on such crap.
It is really sad that this is the most commented article on this blog today. The fact that the name of football team occupies is a concern to the people on the shore speaks volumes for why the area is in such a sorry state.
