Delmar, DE – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a motorcycle crash in which one person was killed and the other was seriously injured.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:10 p.m. Thursday evening as a 60 year old male from Delmar was operating a 2000 Kawasaki Vulcan motorcycle northbound on Sussex Highway (US13) in the right lane approximately a quarter mile north of Iron Hill Road. It is believed that an unknown type vehicle may have pulled out in front of the motorcycle causing the operator to lock the brakes and lay the motorcycle down to avoid contact. In doing so, both the operator and a female passenger of the motorcycle were ejected onto the roadway where the driver landed in the left lane, and the passenger in the right lane. Shortly after the motorcycle crashed, a 2000 Honda Accord, also traveling northbound on US13 in the right lane, partially ran over the female victim, who was apparently unconscious in the right lane.
The passenger, a 48 year old female from Delmar, was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. The motorcycle operator was transported by ambulance to PRMC in Salisbury where he is listed in serious condition. Neither occupant of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet.
The operator of the Honda Accord, Richard N. Jones, 32 of Delmar, was properly restrained and uninjured.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this collision and are actively trying to determine if a non-contact vehicle contributed to the initial crash. Preliminary investigation suggests alcohol is believed to be a factor on behalf of the motorcycle operator. US13 northbound in the area of Iron Hill Road was closed for approximately four and a half hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
The names of the motorcycle riders are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
