Obama Says US Should Have Paid Maternity Leave

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama said Monday that the United States should join the rest of the industrialized world and offer paid leave for mothers of newborns.

"Many women can't even get a paid day off to give birth -- now that's a pretty low bar," Obama said at the White House Summit on Working Families. "That, we should be able to take care of."

The president is touting paid maternity in the midst of a midterm election campaign focused on women voters, without describing the details of how he would fund such a system. "If France can figure this out, we can figure this out," Obama said.

  3. How about going back to the 50's and 60's when Dad's income was plenty to pay for insurance, buy a house, raise six children in it by a full time Mom, and hire a maid to come in on Thursdays to straighten up and clean?

If the United States could figure that out, We certainly can.

What say you to that, Oblama?

  4. France doesn't have it figured out. They can't afford to mandate it either. Some people are to stupid to figure this out. Other people know better but are just pandering to people who want more and more handouts. Divide and conquer Mr. President, you ...

  6. 5:40 you are referring to a time when we had a tax rate that went as high as 80% on the richest Americans.
That was why their was a strong middle class, wealth was more evenly distributed.

  7. Hey, 730, if you are referring to me, I LIVED that life! I'm 60 now. You are probably a lot younger, and have never a clue as to what life was like back then. Your loss, but I suggest you look up a few of us my age to ask your questions. The answers you will get will back up my post.

  8. Just to let everyone know... there are like 10 countries left on earth with no paid maternity leave, and the US is one of them. How is that excusable?

  9. Yes 8:30. I was referring to you. I too grew up in the sixties. With both my parents working 60+ hours a week keeping their small business afloat. And along with the couple of men they employed, they also had 2 women working full time who apparently couldn't get by on just Dads income. I also remember that the mother of the kids across the street had 2 part time jobs to supplement "Dads" income. Were there a lot more stay at home moms back then? Of course. But the picture you paint is just a bit too rosy. And what about that Thursday cleaning lady? I'm sure she would rather have been at home taking care of her own house and kids.
