Maryland Obamacare Insurer Hiking Premiums 30 Percent

Maryland’s beleaguered Obamacare exchange released initial premium rates for 2015 late Friday, with one insurance plan proposing a 30 percent hike.

CareFirst of Maryland Inc. and Group Hospitalization and Medical Services Inc., both CareFirst companies, submitted filings to the Maryland insurance department requesting a 30.2 percent premium increase for individual plans in 2015. CareFirst Blue Choice Inc. requested a 22.8 percent increase for next year, citing an older average membership age and a sicker patient pool.

Maryland’s exchange has only five insurers which participated in 2014 and will add another insurer in 2015. All Savers Insurance, a subsidiary of UnitedHealthcare, requested a 4.8 percent. A nonprofit Kaiser Foundation plan offered a 12.1 percent rate reduction and Evergreen Health Cooperative, 10.3 percent reduction.

  3. Correct. We just found out today that our premiums are going up at least 30%. All policies must cover dental care for children, even though we have NO children.

I guess we CAN'T keep our policies if we like them.

  6. The teachers union wanted the lying Muslim and O'Malley, they got it. Now, here's the main issue. Blue Cross- Care First has requested a rate increase. Requested from whom? Is it from the insurance commission that is appointed by O'Malley? Wake up people. Our insurance rates are going up 30% because of Obama, O'Malley, Conway, and Mathias. And you can include Cardin and Milulski.

  7. They (Carefirst of Md) must think we are stupid. If the Insurance Commission even consider this increase they are the stupid ones. It stated that citing an older average membership age and a sicker patient pool was the reason they are requesting 22.8% increase. What did they do when all those older people were paying their overpriced premiums all these years and did not use the plan? Oh yes that's right, they gave themselves big bonuses with our money. Now that they have to spend a little on the people who have been paying for years they want to increase it. My goodness we must not let their bonuses go away. That would be a shame. RIGHT!!!!

  9. These rate increases are for the Obamacare plans - in most cases, privately obtained policies are also skyrocketing. We learned about two weeks ago that my wife's employer provided policy will be seeing significant increases this year for the same exact plans. Premiums will primarily be based upon age related factors now. Our premiums will increase 70% this year for the exact same coverage and deductibles. Way to go Barry! It is my opinion this administration is hoping to collapse the independent insurance industry so that the government will have to step in and institute their preferred single payer system. This of course will be a new government bureaucracy will all its inherent abuse. Government will then be in total control of our health care and ask the veterans how that has worked for them. This November's election is becoming more critical each passing day.
