United States Secretary of State John Kerry called on Russia to urge Ukrainian separatists to disarm within “the next few hours.” Kerry further hinted that sanctions could be imposed on Russia by the United States and the European Union in the wake of the crisis.
Secretary Kerry stressed that imposing sanctions is not the goal of American or European Union officials, and that they hope to work with Russian authorities without any pressure needed. Kerry’s call for action comes as the cease fire between separatists and the Ukrainian government deteriorates. Kerry also noted that should Russia not cooperate with Western officials in diffusing the situation, sanction discussions would begin as early as tomorrow, June 27, at the European Union Summit in Ypres, Belgium.
