The Next NSA? Police Departments Under Scrutiny For Phone, License Plate Surveillance

The NSA isn’t the only government agency raising concerns about electronic privacy. Local police departments are coming under similar scrutiny – not only for using spying technology, but for hiding their use from the public.

At least 25 police departments now use what is known as "Stingray," a briefcase-sized box that swallows up cell phone data within a mile radius.

More than one in three large police departments are also using license-plate readers, which can record every plate -- even on a four-lane highway – from vehicles going at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour.

  1. When operating within the public, you have no expectation of privacy, so tag recognition is not invasive unless used against you when no probable cause exist. Just like driving is a privilege not a right. Violate certain laws and watch them suspend or revoke your driving privileges.while I'm not a proponent of intrusive random spying, I also understand I haven't anything to fear unless I'm act suspicious or unlawful.

  2. Police filming us, we are filming police. Police kill us. We ....get killed.

Police are scared of their own shadow and will pull their weapon at the slightest hint of trouble.

I am so glad I live in such a FREE country.

Can't say I blame them. They were issued weapons for their protection as well as yours. Don't threaten them and you won't have to worry about a gun being pulled on you.

  4. 12:43...Really?? What bunker have YOU been hiding in?
How many reports have you missed about the Gestapo gunning down unarmed women and children, blasting veterans in their house, shooting people in the back (how does THAT make anyone but a cop "afraid"?), shooting people from their car (!), firing wildly at a CAR (with children inside), shooting old, old men with canes, shooting at criminals and killing their hostage (!), shooting people reaching for their ID, shooting people at the wrong address, and on and on and on and on and on.....
Not threatening the police ain't no guarantee they won't kill you. And "I was afraid" is NOT NOT NOT an excuse the police should be using.
Shooting someone is the LAST thing a cop should be doing, but nowadays, its the very first thing on their minds. Because, according to their own reports, they ARE afraid (like little girls) of everything that moves.
YOU try telling a judge that you killed a kid because you were afraid he'd hurt you. Prison.
    PRISON!
Wear a badge and, as the record reflects, you can kill anyone, anytime, and anywhere and you are golden. You can make up any reason you want and the State's Attorney slaps you on the back and says "good shoot". All you get is a paid vacation.
And PLEASE STOP with the "if you aren't doing anything wrong" half-assed, Forest Gump reasoning. Millions of people have died at the hands of their own government with those very words on their lips.
    Start paying more attention....

  5. 2:23 what you get a speeding ticket or something? You have no clue about what it is to be a cop. It's citizens like you that make their jobs difficult, expect them to be at your door step and at your becken call, but don't bother me unless I want you and then I can bash you because I've walked in your shoe. Crawl back under your rock. Liberal idiot.

Oh come on bootlicker. There are THOUSANDS of cases where police have not only pulled their weapon out, but used it to murder fellow citizens, family pets, and pretty much anything that moved.

The protection police need is therapy. They are not only a threat to themselves, but the population at large.

NOBODY has to commit a crime to be murdered by these rouge cops, as evidenced by all the documented cases where people called the police for HELP and would up being murdered by the same ones they called.

It happens all around us, in other states. Not so much around here that I know about. You really need to explore the big wide world out there.

Ah, here we go with another windbag that knows nothing of which it speaks.

Every cop assumes no one else knows what it is like to be a cop. Like it is some secret society, with their own secret handshake, and cute little 10 code, that is being phased out.

I can't for the life of me understand how Imclaim makes any cops job more difficult merely by using his first amendment RIGHT.

I submit it is cops like YOU that makes the job difficult. And costly for taxpayers who have to pay for settlements awarded because one of you numbnuts violated their civil rights, kidnapped them, stole their property, raped them, killed them or family member or family pet, sigh, the list goes on forever.

We do expect you to be at our door when we BECKON you. That is your JOB, that WE pay you for. Did you catch that? We PAY you. That means you work FOR US. Not the other way around.

What you call bashing, is what we call holding you responsible, which we need more of.

And bud, you obviously don't know the meaning of liberal. If you did, you would realize YOU are the liberal. And idiot as well.

I think you are one of those who should not be a cop. It doesn't seem to suit you.

  8. 8:07 I'm not a cop d$(:head! But I know more about being a cop more than you do! You call police for things like my neighbors tree branch is on my property or there dog won't stop barking, and yet you wonder why we aren't everywhere at once. I disagree with you. I'm realistic and cops have to play mother and father, because you can't be a good parent, I have to be a priests and give you the bad news when one of your loved ones is killed, I have to supervise you and your spouse when the t won of you can't manage your lives. I deal with your complaining, explain why our crime labs aren't as fast as CSI OR NCIS I have wait and get shot at first before I can defend myself. So if you have a problem with any of this your the liberal idiot.
