Students threaten civil disobedience if school doesn't denounce Robert E. Lee

Black students at Virginia's Washington and Lee University have issued an ultimatum: Denounce Robert E. Lee, one of the school's two namesakes, or face civil disobedience, the National Review Online reported Monday.

Students also want the school to apologize for what they call Lee’s “racist and dishonorable conduct,” remove Confederate battle flags from the chapel and ban Confederate reenactors from the campus on Lee-Jackson Day, a state holiday. They also want the university’s undergraduate school to cancel all classes on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Seven black law students, calling themselves “The Committee,” say that if the school does not cave to their demands, they will engage in acts of civil disobedience until their demands are met. The students gave the school until September 1 to meet their demands.

  1. If we forget our past we are bound to repeat it.

In another conversation I had this weekend with some one at Salisbury Fest it was said the "there is no way the jewish holocaust could happen again". my response was its that attitude right there that makes it possible for another holocaust to happen again.

Lessons learned are quickly forgotten if they are assumed to be forever remembered.

  3. Tell them to pack sand. I do not believe the School should change the history of our Country for a measly 4% of students.

  4. You can't fix stupid. If they feel that way, they were stupid to go there in the first place. Everybody can't have everything that they want. I hope the administration doesn't cave in.

  5. Keep Lee and arrest the disobedient. Why should this country change or remove history. They can make changes in others ways!!!

  6. It's time the white students stood up for their rights.

  7. I think they should keep Lee and shoot the disobedient. This is only going to continue as long as you idiots keep voting for Democrats and making "those people" feel entitled. Whose bright idea was it to bring them over here anyway.

  8. Yup, it's all about the history. Love it or not it happened and a good lesson for us all to never forget.

The man is dead. Get over the hurt feelings and remember history.

  9. And people ask why there is racism in this Country? Let's see if Obama chimes in on this one.

Why would these losers have hurt feelings? They have no clue what is going on and obviously you don't either. If they were white people they would have been arrested for terrorism or trying to incite a riot.

  11. These students are clueless. Send them home. period.

  12. Perhaps the students should be looking for another school. Surely, they knew the history of the school when they applied; if they didn't, well, that's their problem. The school was established on certain fundamentals. History can not, & should not, be rewritten. History shows the accomplishments, and the failures, thus showing what to do to exceed and what not to do as well.

  13. Didn't those students "CHOOSE" to attend Washington & Lee???? If you don't like it, then leave. You opted to go there. I'm not saying change isn't warranted for some things at some times, but you're fighting the a history, not an attitude, but a history. You're looking for your 15 minutes of attention. Use that energy for something worthwhile and useful. Be an American, not a bigot.

  14. The school should NOT change a thing. Any student caught doing anything illegal gets arrested and expelled. If they don't like the way things are at the school...LEAVE.!!!!! They're over 18 & can leave whenever they want. Oops, they probably are there for the scholarship money...free ride. Sorry, Black History month...B.S. Where's White History month?? NAACP needs to be abolished, too.

  15. It's not enough for them that Lee was a catalyst to the W & L becoming the a great college that they attend.

However history was changed. Anyone who has a brain knows that it's always the victor that writes the history books.

I will take General Lee and Jefferson Davis over Reid and Obama any day. They are the real traitors in this country.

  19. Change the name. Fine.
    Outlaw black history month too.
Black student unions are racist and need to be closed as well.
    Lets make everything equal.
Affirmative action is an admission of inferiority and should be abolished too.
We all know that these wonderful wholesome students of integrity and character would feel guilty if they were found to be taking advantage of the system that unjustly promoted someone that was not qualified based on merit alone.

  20. Truly I try not to be a racist person. But, these kinds of actions make it difficult for me. This so called committee is racist against history and whites. They need a good old fashion kick in the ass.

  23. Where is anyone trying to change history? They are protesting exactly because of the history. But yes it was pretty silly to enroll and pay for this school when you already knew the background

  24. The made a threat of violence against a school. Ummm are these threats not chargeable offenses? Once charged, kick them out of the school they have chosen to disrupt. Or let them riot and hose them down with a fire hose.

  27. So, what happens when these 'scholars' figure out that Washington was a major slaveholder? I guess they'll be issuing demands until it is called Obama University. Jeez - is it any wonder that no one respects a college degree anymore?

  31. I don't know why those students are so up set The Ministry of Truth(Minitrue in Newspeak)* will have made it all disapear and everyone will be happy and love Big Brother. Ain't things just wonderful. *George Orwell's 1984.

  32. Tsk tsk, tsk!

Washington & Lee had slaves. Fact.

Agree with earlier post asking if these wanna be lawyers had checked what the name of the law school they were applying to was?

Cause trouble that disrupts others? Expel & refund. Let them transfer.

Or could change the name to Jackson & Sharpton & RevWright College. Once you get used to it, has a nice ring to it.

  33. 5:07 You are so right that's why these students are 3L (third year law students). W&L has a few well respected law school which is very selective in admissions. These ain't your average brothers. Win or lose this battle, they are making a name for themselves and will probably use the publicity to get a very high paying job right out of school.

  34. I guess they never learned where slavery REALLY started...seems like everybody tries to pin it on the USA...try again! I bet they are also not taught that the KKK was the enforcement arm of the Democratic Party, and that Lincoln and MLK were Republicans..

You can't compare Robert E. Lee or any Confederate to Hitler and the Nazi's. You are an idiot who is illiterate when it comes to history. You need a bullet between your bushy brows for being a traitor against your own race.

Affirmative action babies. Need I remind you that your own president has a law degree from Harvard. And that buffoon couldn't litigate his way out of a paper bag.

  42. Robert E. Lee was one of the most respected soldiers that served both the North and South and was beloved by both sides. He is a true American hero that I will always honor and admire. I have also taught my kids the same thing.

Sherman and his band of criminals from the North were rapist, thieves and murderers.

By the way that drunk by the name of U.S. Grant owned slaves before the war and even after the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation only applied to Southern states.
