Congressman Andy Harris Announces Winner of Congressional Art Competition

Winner’s Art Will Be Displayed for a Year in the Capitol

Washington, D.C.
– Congressman Andy Harris is pleased to announce the winner of the 2014 Congressional Art Competition: Elizabeth Geckle, an 11th-grader at Rising Sun High School in Cecil County, Maryland. Elizabeth's black ink scratchboard rendering of a crab, titled “Blue,” will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year. (Please see a photo of “Blue,” below.)

“I was amazed by Elizabeth’s attention to detail, and I am excited to see her artwork hang in the U.S. Capitol for all to enjoy,” said Rep. Harris. “All 38 of this year’s participants were impressive, and I hope they will continue to share their artistic talents with others throughout their high school career and beyond.”

Both the Congressman and a professional artist from his district—Nancy O’Brien, co-president of the Kent Island Federation of Art—judged the artwork. The Congressman and Ms. O’Brien also selected a 2nd- and 3rd-place winner, while the Congressman’s Facebook followers voted for a “People’s Choice” winner. They are as follows: YeJin Han of Parkside High (2nd place), Cristina Perez of Elkton High (3rdplace), and Lauren Gomez of Easton High (People’s Choice). You can see all submissions and winning pieces on Rep. Harris’ Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/AndyHarrisMD.

Every year since 1982, the U.S. House of Representatives has sponsored the competition to recognize the artistic talents of high school students in each Congressional district throughout the country. Each Congressional district selects one winner, and that student has the opportunity to display his or her artwork for one year in the U.S. Capitol building, alongside the work of other contest winners from around the country.
