Many minimum wage workers will be getting a raise now that a hike to Maryland’s wage has been signed into law. But while advocates are ascribing the increase as a win, there’s a bitter aftertaste for one group that was left behind.
The minimum wage will increase to $10.10 over the next four years, but the wage for tipped workers was pegged at $3.63, their current pay, despite the fact that the minimum wage will climb nearly $3.
“In a blue state we shouldn’t have to make these compromises,” said Mat Hanson, director of the Raise Maryland campaign.

Does this apply to every stupid place that sticks a tip jar next to the register?
ReplyDeleteBleeding hearts tend to overlook the fact the minimum wage for tipped employees is the same as for all other employees. The employer must pay a cash wage of $3.63, the remainder can be made up from tips received. If tips received do not make up the difference the employer must.
ReplyDeleteThese same people bemoaning the treatment of tipped employees overlook the facts. 1) Almost no tipped employee accurately and honestly reports all tips received. Most of what they earn, therefore, is tax free. 2) Career serves earn a very healthy hourly wage. It's not unusual for one to take hope over $100/day in untaxed cash. That's $12.50/hour plus $3.63 - if they worked 8 hours. A dinner shift is often 4 PM till 9 or 10. That puts them over $20/hour. Most wait folks I know count on having regular $1,000 nights - yes, having a night of earning $1,000 on a regular basis.
The whole matter of raising tipped employee minimum wage is more talk than value.
tipped workers are no different than commission workers
ReplyDeletemy tip for all witers/waitresses now.
ReplyDeletei write in "vote republican".
end of story. no more money given for tips. only that advice. at least if i'm aware.
My advice would be to learn how to spell waiter. I hope you don't plan on eating at any establishments more than once. Servers remember great tippers and people like you.
Deletethe commenters must be the ones that stiff the waitress\waiter.
ReplyDeleteVery few teenagers tip, a group of women don't tip well, and don't forget, that waitress\waiter still have to tip the bartender and the bus boy\girl. So remember when you cheapskates only leave a 10% tip for great service, your waitress doesn't put all of that in her pocket.
Oh! don't forget that some restaurants have the policy that if a table runs out without paying then the waitress has to pay their bill for them! Hopefully she\he is a fast runner and can get your tag # before you can get out of the parking lot!
