3rd Friday in Downtown Salisbury kicks off their outdoor season Friday, April 18 th, 2014! 3rd Friday is back outside, creating an Arts & Entertainment Street Festival, with local artists and vendors set up along Main Street and live music from Pressing Strings, Groove Joose, and The EdgeUcators. 3rd Friday is opening the season with one of the most popular themes from last year; COMIC CON! So dig out the costumes, and get ready for a SUPER TIME!
3rd Friday will be jammed packed with all things Comics and Heroes. Meet real life comic book creators, illustrators, and graphic designers who produce comics right here on the Shore. MeetColdStream Studios founder and UMES Sequential Arts Professor Bradley Hudson as well as DarkCity Creation's founder Lex Gochnour, as they display their latest projects and creations. 3rd Friday veterans, Eastern Shore Fan Con organizers and recent winners of the Wicomico Library's Light of Literacy Award,PLB Comics, will be out in full force with all your favorite series and special editions. If you've never checked out these local publishers, you should definitely stop by their table and chat. PLB, Hudson, Gochnour and many more local illustrators will also have their Fine Art Works on display in the Art Institute and Gallery's first ever "Art of Illustration and Comics" Exhibit. AIG will be focusing an entire showcase on the genre, exploring the aspects and concepts that have allowed the art form to maintain such a strong presence and influence in pop culture and social consciousness.
3rd Friday is dreaming up lots of 'super' ways to have fun, with interactive activities and photo opportunities for kids and adults. We will have a superhero themed moon bounce for the kids, and The Ward Museum and Big Brothers Big Sisters will be there with games and art projects for our smaller heroes. Costumed 3F Event-Goers can participate in a social media based costume and photo contest and you can even build your very own 3rd Friday Super Hero. And of course... Free Comics for All!
Downtown Salisbury will also be celebrating our local athletic heroes, with the ribbon cutting forChampion's Way. The City of Salisbury, along with Salisbury University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore and The Delmarva Shorebirds, will unveil 26 aluminum flags, displayed from the Plaza's decorative street lamps, commemorating our area's championship winning teams from 1963 - 2013. "I applaud the efforts to solidify partnerships between community stakeholders," says SU President Janet Dudley-Eshbach. "We appreciate the opportunity to celebrate not only the SU Seagull's record of athletic excellence, but also those of the UMES Hawks, and The Shorebirds. Interestingly, all our mascots have feathers, and it seems appropriate that we flock together on Champion's Way." WMDT-47's new Sports Director Spenser Tilus will also be there to celebrate this occasion. Spenser has recently joined the team from Colorado, and is looking forward to greeting the community.
Salisbury University Art Galleries | Downtown Campus will have the closing reception for their two current exhibits, as well as a special workshop and artists talk. The Estonian Embassy to the United States' presentation of artist Pusa, an Estonian painter, writer and children's book illustrator, and the Untold Stories exhibit by Korean-American artist Eun Kyung Suh will both have their closing receptions. Eun Kyung Suh will be in Downtown Salisbury all afternoon, offering a free Image Transfer workshop at 2pm, followed by an Artist Talk during her exhibit's reception at 5pm. The workshop will teach participants how to add text and images to textiles, and is free with reservations.
The Downtown Shops are ready with super sales and exciting special events for 3F Comic Con. Cake Art will have super hero themed cupcakes, and a $5 off a dozen special! Season's Best Antiques is excited for the opportunity to showcase their new comic book dealer, who will have all of his comics and comic related items on sale. Enza's Organic Hair Salon will be having a sale on all of their eco friendly and green products in honor of Earth Day, and Kuhn's Jewelers will have a special sale table outside with "Eggstra" special sale prices, right in time for spring.
The Downtown Bars and Restaurants are also ready for 3rd Friday, with great specials for the dinner crowd, and plenty of entertainment planned for night. Roadie Joe's will have The Baltimore Steel Drum Band live on the patio from 5:30 - 8:30 and Cellar Door Tavern will have has Wes Davis starting at 8:30pm. Mojo's
will have DJ SL late night and Market Street Innwill have DJ B-Side, in addition to amazing dinner and happy hour specials. Brew River is having a Friday Night Dock Party with live music from Union Road!
