Straw Poll Signals Paul-Cruz Showdown

The one-two finish of Rand Paul and Ted Cruz in The Washington Times/CPAC straw poll over the weekend cemented their rock star status among grass-roots activists — and signaled that the two tea party favorites are destined for a showdown over which senator will carry the conservative flag in the contest for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination.

For the second straight year, Mr. Paul was easily the top choice of the thousands who converged for the three-day Conservative Political Action Conference just outside the Beltway in suburban Maryland, underscoring the power of the libertarian wing of the movement.

Mr. Cruz, meanwhile, showed that his star is on the rise among this pool of conservatives, as he climbed up the standings from a year ago to finish a distant second.

  2. That means the Dems will win again.

The Repubs need to come up with someone likeable to the independents as well as the R's and some of the D's.

Not going to be a win for the R's. If they can't unify their own party with a reasonable person, they can't do it for the country.

    Screwed, just screwed.

  4. I am noticing that the media (even Fox news and The Blaze) are trying to pick our candidates for us and seem to be focused on Chris Christie.

His best results against Hillary has only been 38% to her 47% and yet he is constantly referred to as a front runner.

How can someone with such a poor standing even be considered a front runner. To me a front runner should be getting around 50%.

It really seems the Media focuses on the most polarizing figures and then constantly rams them down our throat as front runners and then we end up with no one worth voting for when primaries roll around.

Barbara Bush said it right the other day when she said that a country as big as our should be able to produce a bigger variety of candidates. Yet we keep getting the same options each year.

As like during the Civil War...never pay attention to polls or the Government News Media...Fox is owned by the Saudis... They have their own Agenda, but the TEA PARTY is putting our Country on "CRUZ" Control...

  7. 121 & 750, nice try. We all know these two can beat whoever the DNC could muster after the garbage they now own.I mean, look at the trash they have running around now!

  8. Senators and Representatives have few concrete responsibilities, and unless they bring prior executive management experience to the job we pay for OJT. OweBama is just the very worst ever in that regard.

Governors have to deliver results for citizens so prior, successful experience as governor, large business manager or similar is more akin to the presidential tasks.

Republicans have a deep bench of current and former governors who are/were successful state managers (and states require balanced budgets!).

Christie did well to get elected, and re-elected in NJ, but don't think he'll merchandise well enough among R voters, let alone for the Ds who might switch.

Looking for a Governor, but there are better stories available.
