Did Sheriff Lewis Throw Maryland State Trooper, (Brother) Anthony Myers Under The Bus?

In an interview yesterday on WBOC, Sheriff Lewis appeared serious and frustrated when discussing the shooting in Salisbury two days ago.

He stated, this should have never happened. We need more Police training so that this never happens again.

Many have commented about how they recall then State Trooper Mike Lewis shot and killed a man several years ago on the Bypass for attempting to run him over after a traffic stop. It should be clearly noted, Mike was cleared of this incident by Davis Ruark.

I personally believe people should never forget where they came from. It's statements like the one above that is crushing the OLD version of "Brotherhood". Welcome to 2014 and the future of leadership.

  1. For the Top Cop to bad mouth another brother on Tv is just mind boggling ...The officers and troopers need to wake up and NOT forget about what he did ...for a Midget he sure has a BIG MOUTH.

  2. He really had no business inserting himself into this incident period is the way I see it. He wasn't there, he didn't see what happened.

    ReplyDelete
  3. That's he even commented on something as sensitive and that doesn't even concern him, shows he had a compelling need to inflate his importance. Inferiority complex comes to mind.

  4. Someone NEEDS to run against this fool already. He thinks his Sh/t does not stink....Well it does.

  5. Think Mike Lewis should keep his opinions to him self.

  6. KEEP BURNING THOSE BRIDGES....HEY PT SHERIFF when was the last time the deputies got a Raise?....while you are on a self promotional tour you sir are an embarrasment to the Dept.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I am suprised the deputies haven't toilet papered his department car.

    ReplyDelete
  8. A rush to judgment for Mike to say this may have been with knowledge that we the public aren't privy to. Hopefully the investigation will tell the whole story. My first reaction was confusing to say the least....but for anyone to lose their life over something that maybe legal in the near future seems to be an awful ending to something gone horribly wrong.

  9. I didn't see the interview but am ashamed the sheriff would say such a thing.

    ReplyDelete
  10. If there is a different approach that saves lives I'm all for it. Too many seem to be getting shot. However I think Mike was just talking out of his butt. He doesn't have the answer he just wants to look good in front of the camera.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Maybe mike would have stood in front of the guys car and opened up on him killing him just like he did when he was a Trooper remember that Mike.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Here's what I think. I have known many Officers who graduated from the Police Academy in recent years who would disagree with Sheriff Lewis. It's also a smack in the face to those running the Academy to say they are not doing their job properly. Unless, that is, Mike is willing to retire from the Sheriffs Department and become an Instructor.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I feel that Mike was referring to training police officers to resist the urge to reach into the car to grab the keys. Many officers place themselves in a dangerous situation by such actions and too often, end up getting dragged along our roads. This situation seems quite different than Mikes actions as a Md Trooper on the US 13 by-pass and should be considered as such.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 11:31, "I feel that Mike was referring to training police officers to resist the urge to reach into the car to grab the keys." Yet he didn't say that.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Lee Stevens for Sheriff. That is all...

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'll add, perhaps the Sheriff should provide a Press Release defending his position. I am only publishing what I, (and others) saw and read from that interview.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I suppose esp training is needed so officers can know what a criminal is going to do before it happens. Maybe Mike can head up the program.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ummmm just maybe he knows more about the situation then the public does? I guess no one takes that into account.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 11:49, let's say you are correct. Is it Mike's place to show an opinion on the matter on television? Did OTHER Law Enforcement Officers make similar statements when Mike shot the suspect on the Bypass? Do you know what "Brotherhood" means?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Mike is nothing more than a media hound. His pic on the front page of the DT today what the hell was he even there for it was a state police issue.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Maybe Brotherhood is the problem here. Sure does seem like a lot of fatal shootings recently for somewhat trivial offenses.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Joe I seems like you are saying that even if the cops had no right to kill this man that because they are all apart of law enforcement. That they should stick together and cover up for each other! What if this was a loved one of yours Joe albero

    ReplyDelete
  23. So what if he does 11:49? Actually let's just assume he does since we can safely assume he has more knowledge into this incident then we do.
Judging by the comments here and elsewhere this is a sensitive subject. Is his comment something that a prudent person would make? He's adding fuel to a fire not even of his concern at this point in time.
It's always after the fact with these people that they decide more "training" is in order. The sign of a good competent manager is foreseeing future problems and the so called training done prior to an incident. It's why the terrorists are always one up on us. Why no one foresaw planes being hijacked and slammed into the WTC's.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Agree first of all it had nothing to do with Mikey or his department. But he is the first to get in front of a camera and give his 2 cents when no one asked. And yes he should remember the old days but he soon forgets. Maybe someone will run against this part-time Sheriff. But he has pulled the wool over so many people including his wife and family. What a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 12:04 trivial? What is trivial about fleeing with a trooper stuck, and being dragged by this guy?

    ReplyDelete
  26. 12:15, DON'T YOU EVER ATTEMPT TO PUT WORDS IN MY MOUTH.

Unlike you, I'm MAN enough to use my real name when I comment.

I never suggested in any way that cops had no right to kill a man.

As for your COVER UP, I never suggested that either.

However, I will say, SINCE WHEN IS MIKE LEWIS JUDGE AND JURY????

Mike should have refused that interview and realized he is NOT the right hand of God.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I find it interesting that we are dealing with a country wide epidemic of police using excessive force and the general consensus is to give police more training. Yet when the top officer for our county sheriffs speaks up and say just that "officers need additional training" you people jump on him like mindless predators.

As a concerned citizen I think that Mike speaking up and adding credibility to the assertion that officers do in fact need more training to avoid or reduce tension in life and death situations is a step in the right direction.

It would seem that most people are disgusted with the attitude most officers have of non-cooperation when being investigated internally. But, here we have a leader that is willing to do and say whats right by the people he protects and you say "how could he do such a thing.

PEOPLE GET YOUR HEADS STRAIGHT, EITHER YOU WANT CHANGE OR YOU DON'T. MAKE UP YOUR MINDS.

  28. give it a rest! from what I've seen I would have to agree but would go further. All the kops need more and better training in how to deal with the public. Not just showing up and pulling a gun!
sooner or later the public is going to get tired of this cowboy mentality then what?

You are an idiot! This criminal didn't lose his life over MJ, he lost his life because he disobey and order from a sworn peace officer and he tried to kill the said peace office.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the 2 police officers involved because they will have to deal with this the rest of their lives. On a second note Good Work MSP, Marylands finest.

  31. I have not scene the clip and I am going to look for it. BUT if Mike Lewis did say that and in that derogatory tone I am going to vote against him. Everyone should do the same to prove a point.

Only his name will be on the ballot and I am going to write in Barney Fife. If everyone does the same and he has more write in then actual votes that will prove a point.

A write in candidate will not count unless someone registers to run as a write-in in a timely manner.

Imagine this Mike Lewis 1,037 Votes = Write-in 12,199 votes. That would send a message to the Half Pint.

I have been asking the same question for years. For every "department", they replicate the infrastructure. Why? A cop on the street is what he is no matter where the HR comes from. Citizens don't care what color the squad car is. They just want protection.

  41. Maybe I'm missing something. The duty officer came out to check a repair, smelled pot, they guy gets into the car. The duty officer tried to get the keys, the bad guys hits the gas, officer pulls gun & shoots as he's being dragged. I say "Good Shot" & glad you're not seriously injured. What was the duty officer supposed to do? Let the guy drive off stoned so he could kill someone on the road? I know you people were born with brains. Sheriff Lewis should have said "no comment", matter is under investigation.

Have they been told not to stick their hands in cars? Do you know if that is part of their training.

Here is a novel idea. If you are a criminal and you don't want to be shot dead then stay away from police departments and stop when they tell you to stop. Also don't run from an officer and drag him down the street. He has a free arm and he may be able to reach his service weapon.

  66. Do you think the officer would do the same thing again if the same thing happened again a year from now? Do you think that he is proud of himself for sticking his arm inside a car window like he is in an action movie to stop somebody from pulling off with a substance that will probably be legal in a year....and then ended his life? If he is proud of his steps, he should not be a cop. I am not saying that he should have let the guy go, but you have to think it could have been handled differently. He already had the driver's information. What if he jumped in front of the moving car?...would that be the right steps to apprehend a run-away weed smoker? Some kind of additional training is needed. I cant believe somebody trained to do that. There has to be some other steps when a criminal tries to leave the scene other than reaching into a moving car.

To reach inside of a car to turn the car off (because of marijuana) and then allow yourself to be injured plus shooting & killing someone is ridiculous & unprofessional. Trooper had the info on the car & had visually seen the man. Why didn't he just let him go & then get a warrant for him?

  78. To E-6 from a fellow officer. Like it or not. Mike Lewis is the Sheriff of this county. I have known Myers since he was in diapers. I dont think he has an issue with it. The Sheriff spoke what he felt at the time was correct. The question is did it get a little twisted by some. The answer is abosolutely. By the way I know you are NOT E-6. So with that said the Sheriff himself had to walk this same path as Myers. The man is speaking from his accounts and thoughts that go back many years. No one repects cops more than Mike does. So as the TOP law enforcement of the county he has the right to speak to any matter relating to issues in this county. I know all of you are concerned for Cpl. Myers no one more then I. To insult the Sheriff of the county does nothing for this cause. Joe has a hot topic and he is playing you guys like a three dollar flute. Joe I have a great deal of repect for you over the years you have taken your lumps in stride. It takes ball to do what you do. I do think you are letting personal bias dictate what you are releasing latey.

The botoom line is the man was speaking to the entire situation. It is a sad day when this happens. I have been to way to many police funerals in my day. I have seen numerous suspects shot and killed. We will all have an opinion on this topic. I prayed for Anthiny and his family. This man will forever be in question himself as to that night. It is not a rewarding part of this job to take a life. It is a peril we all face if you are activly fighting crime.

So I say support ALL you brothers and sisters that do this day in and day out. I dont care what Fisher did or didnt do the bottom line is he placed himself in a situation that cost him his life. Everything happened as it should have. Cpl. Myers is going to be great. There is so much support for he and his family.

As for the suspect his family has suffered a loss as well. They do deserve any disrespect they have suffered enough. God bless the Myers and the Fishers during this trying time. I pray they all find peace in such troubling times.

Joe thanks for giving people a place to vent and voice. Keep it real road dogs you are all eachother have.

If he wasn't high he had nothing to fear and if he was he didn't need to be driving on busy RT 13. The Trooper if he suspected he was high had a duty not only legally but ethically and morally to do all he could to prevent the guy from driving and potentially hurting or killing innocent people.

  85. It was irresponsible for the County Sheriff to make a public statement about a State Police matter . Do you see the MSP talking about county law enforcement matters. No. It is unprofessional and erodes interagency cooperation and good will. He put his life on the line for the public by wanting to stop a suspected impaired person from driving. I can't imagine any rational person thinking it's okay for a high person to be driving.

  94. You state that Mike Lewis was cleared of the shooting he did by Davis Ruark. The same state attorney that is the drunk driver and carrying a loaded gun in violation of Maryland gun laws. The same Davis Ruark that mad all of those plea bargains with the local sex offenders. We got rid of him, now we need to get rid of the jack ass Lewis!

I am not a fan of Sheriff Lewis but I agree with him. Those who know the parties involved in this incident probably agree with him but won't come out & say it. To reach inside of a car to turn the car off (because of marijuana) and then allow yourself to be injured plus shooting & killing someone is ridiculous & unprofessional. Trooper had the info on the car & had visually seen the man. Why didn't he just let him go & then get a warrant for him?

    March 20, 2014 at 6:32 PM

Yeah that's a good idea. Just let the criminal walk and we will pick him up later. NOT!! You soft hearted liberals need to take a break and move to Kenya. Morons.

Press release says he smelled pot. It did not say if it was the odor of burnt pot or if there was pot in the vehicle. Driver may not have been stoned and/or impaired to drive. It is possible that the deceased was not under the influence and only had some pot in the vehicle. Not saying that would be the smartest move in the book but hardly warrants the death penalty. MSP had the driver's info/vehicle plates. He could have been arrested at a later date. Similar to rules of vehicle pursuit v. not to pursue. Is it worth putting an officer's life or the public's life at risk?

  104. What a shame that people who were NOT on the scene of this make judgment calls. It real simple, the trooper could have been drug in a way that he felt his life was in danger. It had nothing to do with guy getting away, it had more to do with he felt he was going to be killed. A 2000 lb car is a WEAPON, period. More people die from cars than guns every day.

We were not there, none of us. Please stop think, if it was you or your family member and you needed to react what would you do and be honest with your self.

Trusting cops, most who do not trust cops have a reason, they are not honest people. The job does not pay much, the hours are terrible and benefits not that great. Most LEO's do it because they love the job.

It also costs a lot of marriages, stress and some never make retirement. This blog has allowed too many comments negative towards this subject. EVERYONE of you complain when cops dont do their job, guess what? Most now have become afraid to do it because they would be sued. Try going to go to work everyday waiting on some blogger hoping to catch you making a mistake so they can sue you.

If you want to make a difference, get rid of bloggers and lawyers. Lewis good or bad is the Sheriff, if you dont like him vote for someone else. If you dont want to work for him, find another job.

IN THE MEANTIME - support your police officers, and brothers officers. Dont become divided by idiots.

  105. 12:30-I understand what you are saying but even if the smell (unburnt or otherwise) was there don't you think the trooper should atleast check it out to make sure the man wasn't under the influence?
5:09-I believe people should have an intelligent debate over community occurrences especially major ones. Being involved is a form of education. One of the major problems we face is your "move on" attitude-like people are sheep or something.

  107. 7:40, aka, 0084, Get rid of Blogs? Are you actually trying to say, get rid of FREE SPEECH? Get rid of ANYONE who might disagree with Police?

Look, let me assure you, you have NO IDEA just how many comments I rejected from this Post. Yes, there are some SERIOUS Cop Haters out there. Ask Mr. Baker as I sent him just a couple of them that were over the top and thought deserved special attention.

Trust me though, they were NOTHING compared to the cop hater comments I rejected.

This comment makes 105. I'll bet you I rejected at least 50 more comments.

Getting back on track here. You have to take the good with the bad. It's unfortunate when the bad comments come in and people like you and Mike Lewis start hating Joe Albero because I let them through. You guys have to realize, (THAT GOES FOR FIREFIGHTERS AS WELL) I did not author those comments and I will not simply reject comments to fit your wants and needs.

That being said. LOOK deep at the comments published. This is the pulse of the Shore. A person may walk up to you and act very nice and respectful but that very same person comes to this Blog and feels comfortable enough to express how they truly feel anonymously and without fear of retaliation and trust me, that includes POLICE OFFICERS.

Yes, Mike Lewis is a great guy but don't you think for a second his team and or the general public like him as much as they are pressured to act differently when they see him in person.

Oh, don't think I don't know that about a LOT of the people I know too, I get it. At least my EGO isn't so huge I've forgotten how to be a realist. I happen to know of many meetings I've had with Mike i the past that no sooner did I leave the room he was talking smack behind my back, not man enough to say it to my face. I say not man enough, not as a tough guy challenge, just as a simple way to explain the difference between Mike and myself.

In closing, it seems OK for people like YOU to hate people like me and or the people who dislike a situation and or a Police Officer. THINK hard about that, because you should look right in the mirror and recognize YOU are that very same person.

Teachers have no support from admin, the kids have learned they can do whatever they want & these students are increasing in numbers whereas those who wanna learn are the minority!! It's called bullying while their in school then these thugs become our crime statistics! Visit a school, the teachers can't send students to the office, if they do nothing happens but a 10 min time out & they bring them back to the classroom where they continue disrupting?? Let's not act too shocked when we read the headlines, society has zero respect and we teach that by not setting boundaries in our schools!!

You have no idea WTF you are talking about. If you are referring to the trooper, which is the topic BTW, he did the right thing and stopped a drug addict that was going to murder him. If he wouldn't have been stopped he would have continued driving on the roads and murdered an innocent driver. Hopefully it would have been you.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I AGREE with lewis... Cops these days are putting themselves into a situation where deadly force is needed to end the situation and the outcome could have been better had they not done so...

They could have made roadblocks or spike strips are other things... NO the first thing cops want to do is shoot, kill and then go on paid vacation... Where are all these so called non lethal trainings and weapons at they said they were making years ago? no they are buying mine resistant tanks and being armed like the military, just lie obama said, and here you all don't think there is a problem...

NO person in their right mind would go high or with drugs or smelling like drugs knowingly to a police station for a repair order inspection only to try and drive away when the cop jumps in the car thru the window and then shoots him... I find there is something funny to this story... Every cop shooting they say drugs are involved as if it is ok to murder someone...

I have noticed a distinct change of attitude concerning law enforcers. They seem to be much more aggressive and intrusive than I can ever remember. Hey Dumba$$, there is no greed and nothing wrong with what they are doing. They just happened to be retired and took another job. Mike Lewis retired from the State of Maryland. He is now employed by the voters of Wicomico County. He is not a state employee and doesn't have a second job or retirement with the state. If he did it is still legal.
