County Fire Marshal’s Office Looks At Personnel Issues

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office could use some help, especially because retirements among the small staff are anticipated.

One long-time employee is expected to retire within a year or so and Fire Marshal Jeff McMahon said he could retire in a couple of years. Another is marrying and could relocate. The office could go from an experienced staff of four down to one in a short time period, McMahon told the Worcester County Commissioners during its March 11 budget work session.

In addition to McMahon, the Fire Marshal’s Office employs one chief deputy fire marshal and two deputy fire marshals and one administrative assistant. When one of the small staff is out sick or on vacation, it makes the work load even more substantial. One member of the Fire Marshal’s Office was out of commission for 14 weeks due to a hand injury.

  1. Easy pickins here , the thing of today is insurance fire for money.

  3. If they would spend more time doing their work than selling Girdletree fire company raffles and fundraiser tickets, running their own restaurant then they could get their work done. I live in Ironshire (near Berlin) and drive to Laurel, DE to work. I cut across country roads and for years have watched the one who lives on the Powellville-Willards road take his kids to school in Willarda/Pittsville in his white county truck. another one of their trucks is at the metal shop in Libertytown quite a bit too all hours of the day and night. Again do you work and quit wasting my county tax dollars. I think most of the other MD counties use the State Fire Marshal office and maybe just have a fire inspector or fire plan review person.

  4. Worry about it when the one person actually retires.

This scare tactic is ridiculous. While it's always good to plan ahead, it doesn't mean the person expecting to retire will leave them hanging. I'm sure they'll give enough notice to find a replacement. Same goes with the other person who recently married.
