Wicomico County December Jobs Nos. Just In - US Bureau of Labor Statistics - Wicomico County Has Record Job Loss

If last nights County Council meeting the Income Tax Projections wasn't enough bad news for County officials - well today's December's job numbers show no improvement to the local employment scene.  According to the latest US BLS jobs numbers (click on link for source), Wicomico County recorded its largest monthly job loss to date.  The preliminary report shows that during December the county lost 1,863 workers year over year compared to December 2012

At last nights County Council meeting - the County's Finance Director revised the job estimates downward, thus resulting in a 3.45 million dollar revision to the estimated state income tax revenues.  November's job number was revised downward by 9 - showing a slight improvement, but barely marks a dent in what is needed to sustain our local economy.  Although the December unemployment rate dipped by .2 to 7.9% - the overall workforce continues to diminish.

  2. Yea, and you've got some Democrat from Baltimore worried about crab cakes. Have you people not finally gotten the message from your Democratic leadership?

  3. You think it is bad now, just wait until the "chicken Tax"
kicks in and those jobs go to
    the surrounding states.

  4. This is nothing! Wait until Obamacare kicks in with the employer mandate after the elections. It's not going to be pretty.

  5. Hey Rick & Wayne, are you astute people still scratching your heads trying to figure out what happened?

  6. Notice how the so called PRESS have said NOTHING about this for more than a year. Also notice how Ireton has skirted from any responsibility of this job loss as well.

  7. Yet they voted to raise our taxes yet again and up the landfill fee even though it is run by county employees!!!! Five years ago I was earning over 20 per hour and had my job outsourced to India. Luckily I am now employed, but my income is only 12 per hour. I had to downsize and sell some stuff to pay some of my debts. My question is, why doesn't the county do the same? Except for these government officials, I don't know too many people who are making as much as they used to make. I even had to get rid some luxury's like cable TV. There comes a breaking point where people just cannot continue to pay these taxes and fees! We need jobs here, not higher taxes. Jobs will bring in more tax revenue. You can't keep taxing your way to prosperity!!!!

  8. Wow and double wow! Typically areas esp ones heavy in the retail sector show gains in Dec due to seasonal hiring.

  9. "You can't keep taxing your way to prosperity!!!!"

No you can't 4:47. Try telling that to democrats though. They are intellectually incapable of grasping it. All they know how to do is tax and spend and then lie to their even dumber constituents how great things are.

  11. I've got news for you, if the job declines continue at this rate, they are going to have to re-adjust what they just adjusted last night. This is not a laughing matter.

  12. You can't blame the chronic employment condition on the employer mandate just yet. Once that kicks-in we are going to be in for a real ride.

  13. I hope there is a bottom to this soon. At this rate we'll all soon be on electronic debit cards.

  14. 4:14, the crab cake bill is actually a great idea. Most of the restaurants that serve them state "Voted Best Maryland Crab Cakes In The Universe!!!" when their crab meat is from Indonesia or some other Asian country.

  15. Why are all of these people disappearing. I would like to know where they are going and what they are doing.

  17. Was unemployed with exception of some menial jobs in OC during the summer for almost 3 years. Fortunately my friend got me a decent paying job on western shore. Long commute but my family and I would starve if I didn't because no jobs around here and the ones that are available pay terrible.

  18. Pollitt has not yet filed for reelection, so maybe he really is "outtahere".

  19. 6:17 most are moving to the other side of the bridge. Was driving through DC and Baltimore suburbs last week and you should see how vibrant that area is with jobs. Construction all over the place with tons of workers. Construction company I visited was looking for cleanup workers paying $15/hour. These depressing numbers and the county's catastrophic conditions are Salisbury's ignorant and incompetent so-called leaders' fault.

  20. Here is what it says will happen when AHCA employer mandate kicks in according to the CBO - (Congressional Budget Office);

'The long-term effect of ObamaCare on the U.S. economy was rewritten Tuesday with the Congressional Budget Office issuing a revised projection that nearly 2.5 million workers could opt out of full-time jobs over the next 10 years -- allowing employers to wipe 2.3 million full-time jobs off the books.'

You know what this means locally, it means LESS LOCAL REVENUE BECAUSE LESS PEOPLE WILL BE WORKING. Better strap on your seatbelt folks!

  21. As far as were people are going and what they are doing.... My family and I moved from Delmarva last July to Naples Florida...just voted the fastest growing town in the United States google it. South west Florida is growing faster than any other area of the US. As far as jobs there are many and they pay well. My salary increased well over what I made on Delmarva doing the same work. Delmarva is soon to be history.... People that can are leaving fast.

  22. it is a bit hard to imagine that 2.3 million people will opt out of full time work to keep their healthcare. have 2.3 million even signed up for it?

  23. too late for a casino ...too late for the old mall ...too late for a profitable Civic Center....the universe does not revolve around Salisbury state or PGH ...but not too late to sell taxpayer property for pennies on the dollar push section 8 housing federal short term fireman funding.... the incompetence is plentiful in our politicians..

Just goes to show you - it doesn't pay to work anymore. You are getting a dose of what its like to live under a tyrant.

  25. 7:44,your exactly right. Our leaders could'nt make decisions on those proposed projects for years and now we have nothing. What's the point of having leaders if they cant or afraid to make decisions because of special interest.

  27. Even if the latest statistics came out yesterday, I don't believe it would have made a difference in the county councils vote because as you can see, our economy is getting worse. I would have thought by now we would have hit bottom, but now it appears as though the bottom is alot deeper than my original assessment.
I am really stunned by these numbers.

  28. Response to 6:37 Posting

I agree, the economy appears to be breaking down. Property values are already substantially lower, and now they will probably go even lower with less jobs. This is not a good indicator.

  29. Joe - you might want to forward a copy of this to George Chavalier. The reason is of historical significance. If anyone ever wants to see what a 2014 Depression looks like, you are looking at it.

Pollitt may be looking to move on -- to Annapolis.

    You heard it here first!

  31. 7:29 - and we thought it couldn't get worse than having OweMoron as governor!

  32. By the look of these numbers, our county might have to revise their income tax projections yet again.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 6:15 That says more about the consumer.

  34. These so called leaders arent stupid....they do these things on purpose, much like a terrorist, its a devised long term scheme. For years of all the purposeful destruction put on businesses, jobs and families....these people shouldnt just be voted out...they should be put in prison!!!!!

And yet STILL...good men do NOTHING!!!

  35. I own a small construction firm and all of our work is by the bridge and across.

The only thing being built here is medical facilities and with people like TEMCO bidding so so low and loosing their butt you cannot compete here.

I am in business to make money and make my guys money. I don't know how much longer these companies around here can keep getting jobs at such low bids and keep surviving.

I agree, these animals, I repeat these animals that created the present chaotic economic condition in our county should be behind bars. I agree with an earlier posting, this is a depression.

  37. Joe, you interviewed all of the candidates in 2010. I'm sure people like Mathias and Conway promised jobs. All they have given us is tax increases! I'd love to see you re-run those videos and show the voters all of the broken promises.

  38. I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but there is no other media that is covering this. Despite, the US Bureau of Labor, and the Congressional Budget Office - (two of the largest data collectors) - and yet there is nothing mentioned on any of the other medias. NOW THAT IS SCARY.
