MAKE THE RIGHT PLAY THIS SUPER BOWL –
DRIVE SOBER OR HAND OFF THE KEYS TO A DESIGNATED DRIVER
DUI
enforcement to be stepped up on Super Bowl Sunday
Wicomico County-The Super Bowl is one
of America’s most highly anticipated sports events, when friends and family
gather in homes, bars and restaurants to celebrate. As Super Bowl Sunday
approaches and football fans across Maryland prepare for the game, the Wicomico
County Sheriff’s Office have joined
in the statewide push to spread the message about designating a sober driver on
Super Bowl Sunday, because – Fans Don’t
Let Fans Drive Drunk.
“There is absolutely no reason to
get behind the wheel after drinking,” said Sheriff Mike Lewis “Drinking and driving is deadly, and
our Deputies have absolutely no tolerance when it comes to drunk drivers on our
roads.”
According to Maryland crash data,
an average of 175 people has lost their lives in each of the past five years to
alcohol-related crashes. Nationally, 9,878 people were killed in
alcohol-impaired-driving crashes
in 2011 (the last year of complete national data) and those
crashes were 31 percent more likely to occur on weekends than on weekdays.
“If you will be drinking, make a
plan to get home safely before you go out,” stated Sheriff Lewis “Designate a
sober driver before the party begins, call a cab, or arrange to stay where the
party is occurring. The last thing you want is a ride in one of our patrol cars
at the end of the night.”
If you’re attending a Super Bowl party or watching the game at a sports
bar or restaurant:
§
Designate your sober driver, or plan another way
to get home safely before the party begins.
§
If you don’t have a designated driver, then ask
a sober friend for a ride home; call a cab, friend, or family member to come
and get you; or just stay for the night.
§
Use your community’s sober ride program.
§
Never let friends drive if they have had too
much to drink.
If
you’re hosting a Super Bowl party:
§
Make sure all your guests designate a sober
driver in advance, or arrange for alternate transportation to ensure they get
home safely.
§
Serve food and include non-alcoholic beverages
at the party.
§
Stop serving alcohol at the end of the third quarter
of the game and begin serving coffee and dessert.
§
Keep the numbers for local cab companies handy,
and take the keys away from anyone who has had too much to drink.
And remember, your seat belt is
your best defense against a drunk driver in a crash.
Stepped up! It should have never been downsized! Drunk drivers are killers running loose on our streets, they are more of a danger to all of us, and our children, then the Sex Offenders that live among us! There should be a DUI enforcement check point outside of every bar! Makes loads of money for the state, and burn their ass for getting drunk!
ReplyDeleteStepped up unless the county is sponsoring an event like pork in the park, wine festival, fireworks, etc.
ReplyDeleteWho going to watch the cops!
ReplyDeleteI would like to see real statistics where the at fault driver was drunk. Not had a beer 2 days ago. When the law in a lot of areas allows drive thru liquor stores, just how serious are we about the problem?
