SALISBURY — Another less-than-lethal device could be added to the Salisbury Police Department’s (SPD) force continuum.
A 12-month pilot program for Electronic Control Devices (ECD) was discussed by the City Council Monday and will move to a vote at the next legislative session.
The pilot program calls for nine ECD devices to be deployed in the field. Funding for the program would come from money generated by city speed cameras with $12,500 requested at this time.
“The benefit of this technology is such that police officers will have a use of force tool to gain offender compliance without having to put hands on the offender which risks injury to the police officer as well as workman compensation claims,” said wrote Major David Meienschein, who serves as Administrative Commander.

Oh God no. I'm sorry but cops around here are not educated nor trained enough to use what they use now, let alone tasers. They will use them just for the heck of it.
ReplyDeleteNow instead of spraying sitting down students with mace, they can tase them as well. Hoooo Daddy!
ReplyDeleteWhy would pilots need tasers? Is it for protection against terrorists?
ReplyDeletethe maker of the tasers has had numerous out of court settlements with the families of those killed by this device. It is not harmless and or less lethal than any other form of punishment the police may choose to use upon you. They settle out of court because they don't want the public to know just how lethal these devices are! thus setting themselves up for even greater scrutiny and possible bankruptcy!
ReplyDelete9 Tasers for $12,500, Really? Why do they need night sticks then?
ReplyDeleteanonymous 11:09, BECAUSE, as often as they'll use the tasers, the batteries will wear out. They need some kind of back up with crime like it is in Salisbury.
ReplyDeleteExcellent device. Taser's alone have never killed anyone.
ReplyDeleteHow many times has it been reported that cops use tasers improperly and as an offensive weapon? How many people have died from them? I don't think this is a good idea.
ReplyDeleteI agree as much crime as there is in Salisbury they need a tank or 2 and a couple Bazooka's ! These units will need a battery shop to keep them going!
ReplyDeleteEvery other police agency on the shore has tasers already. SPD is just behind on technology as usually.
ReplyDeleteLong overdue, and I hope they use them a lot. Maybe it will deter some crime, although with the mindset around here... I expect a lot of tasering. If that doesn't work, may I suggest a nice sidearm.

A large portion of the cops that have murdered unarmed citizens were also carrying tasers. Who's to say they'll even use the damn things over their sidearm? Particularly after the novelty wears off?
