'Pastafarian' Politician Sworn Into Office While Wearing Spaghetti Strainer On His Head

The Pomfret, N.Y., town council member is also a minister in the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

It's something of a faux pas for politicians to be sworn into public office while wearing kitchen appliances. So this must be a first: Christopher Schaeffer—a new Town Council member in Pomfret, N.Y.—was sworn into office Thursday while wearing a spaghetti strainer on his head.

Here is the proof, from Dunkirk's Observer.

The strainer comes with a purpose. Schaeffer is a self-professed Pastafarian, and a minister of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. The church plays off traditional, organized religion by rallying around a supposed Flying Spaghetti Monster in the sky.

  2. This is just plain ignorant and offensive. Good luck to those people who voted him in. I'm a Christian and I don't care if people are atheist. It's their choice, and I certainly don't go around mocking them for it.

  3. there is a calvin & hobbes cartoon that shows calvin wearing a colander on his head, (which i guess new yorkers use to "strain" their spaghetti??) anyway, calvin refers to this device as an "ATOMIC CEREBRAL ENHANCE-O-TRON". i'd vote for calvin or hobbes anyday, but i'm not sure about this guy.

This is no more ignorant and offensive than people swearing in on a Bible. THIS is the shining example of WHY government needs to be and stay secular. You don't get to have it both ways, you can't get all gushy over a swearing in on a Bible, then get offended when someone wears a Pastafarian hat.

You don't get to argue for religious gestures in government, then get offended when it is not your particular brand of religiosity. You just don't. When you do, it exposes the fact that you don't care one iota about religious liberty and freedom, but only about imposing YOUR particular brand on everyone else.

    It's just that simple.

PLEASE stop with these baseless attacks like that! You make all conservatives look like MORONS who can't argue with reason and facts. What you are saying is the default argument when you can't present anything tangible. Please STOP doing this.

I am registered Republican, Identify as Libertarian, and voted for Gary Johnson in the last election.

If you are a conservative, and claim the "high" intellectual prowess... then act so and present tangible ideas. Not just parrot a poor one that you have zero evidence to back up.
